Can You Make Money Today With Directories on Long Tail Domain Names?

I received an email from Fred Mercaldo asking a question regarding his portfolio of long tail geographic service domain names. His portfolio of developed domain names had once been making a fair amount of monthly income, but it seems that since the Google algorithm updates, the traffic and revenue have gone way down.

In emailing about this with him, he thought it might make a good discussion if I posted his email question here to get additional insight. The discussion should be about operating directory websites that make money on long tail domain names.

iStockPhoto Having a One Day Sale

iStockphoto logoOn my websites (not including this blog), I try to add a photo or graphic to most of the pages. I understand that visitors stay longer on pages that have a graphic, and it might be better for SEO as well. Although I often use free photos from Flickr (with attribution), I use stock photos as well.

My favorite stock photo website is iStockphoto, and I want to let you know about a one day sale the company is running today only. If you use the special promo code  DEAL15, you’ll save 15% on your purchase. I haven’t seen iStockphoto give out special coupon offers like this before, and I want to share it in case it can be useful to you.

I like iStockphoto.com because it’s easy to search, and the company has a huge selection of stock photos from which you can choose. I generally prefer stock photos over the free Flickr photos on static pages on my site and/or when I think a more precise image is necessary. I find it to be a time saver to use iStockphoto instead of Flickr, and when I overlay a photo over a graphic, it’s easier to use a stock photo service.

Visit the site for full details about the offer. There are some terms and conditions including these: ” *Valid for online purchase only. May be redeemed only once and cannot be combined with other discounts or offers. Qualifying conditions, such as minimum purchase amounts, may apply.” This promo is billed as a 24 hour offer, so if you’re interested, you should check it out now.

This isn’t any type of affiliate deal or paid post.

Help Tia Wood Open an Office

I saw Tia Wood’s tweet this morning, and I wanted to share it with you. Tia has helped me numerous times when my websites have needed updates and/or upgrades. I trust Tia with my WordPress websites, and she always seems to be available when I need web development work done.

Tia Wood created a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds to open an office in her area so she can meet with clients. While working with domain investors probably pays some of the bills, I think having local business owners as clients will help her grow her business more rapidly. Domain investors (myself included) are notoriously cheap when it comes to development work, and small business owners tend to be willing to pay more for website design and upkeep.

Here’s how your donation will be used if you are willing to help Tia Wood according to the campaign website:

“Your donation will help me with the deposit, first month’s rent, furniture and equipment I will need to turn the key to my dream! I’ve already scouted out the location; a small and modest space in the downtown area of where I live.”

I appreciate all that Tia has done for my business and I am eager to launch my next website very soon (just waiting to finalize some paperwork on a deal).

I Want To Buy a Website

I am looking to buy a website, and I invite you to submit yours if you are looking to sell your website. I have a few very firm requirements, so please do not submit your website if it doesn’t meet all of these requirements. To save us both time, if it doesn’t meet all requirements, the answer is “thanks, but no thanks,” and the comment won’t be posted.

StatCounter Down in Chrome

Stat CounterI use a premium version of  StatCounter as one of my two traffic tracking tools for my blog. I think the data the service provides is excellent, and it allows me to review certain metrics much more quickly than Google Analytics can. I use both of these tools so I can cross-check the results to be sure the figures are accurate.

For some reason, StatCounter.com doesn’t seem to be working anymore in Google Chrome. There’s no error message at all, and when you visit the website, it’s simply not resolving. I thought the site might be down completely, but a couple of quick checks showed me that it’s up and running. I also confirmed that it was an issue limited to Chrome by successfully using it on Safari and Firefox.

I haven’t heard of an issue where a website operates perfectly fine on certain browsers but doesn’t resolve at all on another browser. Hopefully this is just a temporary issue because I almost exclusively use Chrome these days, and it would be annoying to have to check out stats on Safari while using Chrome for everything else.

If you know anything about why Stat Counter isn’t working in Chrome, please let me know. I want to keep on using the company’s services.

*** 1:00pm update: It appears that the issue has been resolved ***

Industry Veterans Launch Redesigned Resume.com Website

Domain name industry veterans Rick Kirkendall and Richard Lau have relaunched a redesigned Resume.com website. As you might expect, the website is a “resume hosting & job service provider that allows job seekers to upload their resumes & employers.”

From what I understand, Kirkendall and Lau acquired the name within the past three years, and they started this joint venture shortly thereafter. The pair also own the plural Resumes.com.

Despite the fact that the resume search term is ultra competitive in this difficult job market, Resume.com consistently ranks in the top of Google and Bing for related search terms. The relaunched website looks sleek, is highly functional, and will presumably produce results for users and for its owners.

Congratulations to Rick and Richard on the re-launch. Wishing them both much continued success.
