Social.org Sells for Nearly $150k

Nearly four months after Social.org sold for $228,600 in a NameJet auction where the winning bidder didn’t pay, the second public auction for Social.org concluded today, and the winning bid was $149,999.

Unlike the last time, it appears that this auction should actually close. Along with the mandatory bidder verification, I believe the winning bidder has won previous NameJet auctions. Of course, there’s always a chance that the auction won’t be completed, but I imagine it will go through.

Since it’s past 5pm and most banks are already closed for the weekend, we will most likely need to wait until next week or two in order to confirm that the winning bidder paid. For the sake of the domain owner and NameJet, I sure hope that’s the case.

Tips to Run a Successful (Large) Private Auction on a Platform Like Sedo

Last week, I wrote about the ongoing  Brands-and-Jingles .ME Auction at Sedo. I think it’s quite smart to work with a company like Sedo (or a competitor like Aftermarket.com) to hold a large auction event like this because it will bring interested buyers who may end up buying more than one domain name. It will almost certainly generate more revenue than individual listings at an aftermarket website.

If you think you have a good enough group of domain names to run a private auction on a platform like Sedo or Aftermarket.com I want to share some tips on how you can drive traffic to your auction and generate additional revenue.

Brands-and-Jingles to Hold .ME Auction at Sedo

In May, the .ME Registry held an auction of .ME domain names at Sedo, and that  auction  resulted in over $150,000 in sales, with high dollar sales on Cruise.ME, Air.ME, Malta.ME, Legal.ME, and others. Nearly 100 domain names were sold in the Registry auction.

A company called  Brands-and-Jingles is hoping for similar results, and they plan to auction 190 .ME domain names running through July 12. The reserve prices range from $149 and $999. To view all of the domain names that are up for sale, you can visit Sedo.com/ME.

If you have the inventory to do it, I think it’s smart to work with a company like Sedo to hold a private auction event like this. It can help generate revenue and will bring attention to a large portfolio of domain names. The prices yielded may be less than selling individually, but it creates a nice liquidity event for the owners (and Sedo).  In a couple of days, I will offer some tips on holding an auction like this if you have the inventory and desire to do so.

What are your top picks for the auction, and how much do you think it will generate in sales?

Social.org Auction Back on NameJet

In March, Social.org sold for well over $200,000 on NameJet. Unfortunately for the seller and NameJet, the winning bidder failed to pay, and his account was suspended. I didn’t receive confirmation, but it would seem that the underbidders did not opt to move forward at their high bids either.

NameJet has re-scheduled the auction for Social.org, and the current high bid is $7,501. There are almost 350 bidders involved in the auction, many of whom presumably didn’t delete the name from their backorders and were re-entered after the first auction closed. The name will go to auction in a little over 16 days from today.

The lost sale is a bummer for a number of reasons, but one of the biggest issues is that there was considerable publicity for the auction, and the second time around will probably see much less coverage. It’s too bad the owner couldn’t (or didn’t) go after the person who placed the winning bid. Perhaps he could go after him legally if the second auction ends at a lower price than the first auction.

Hopefully there will be a better bidder verification system in place for this auction.

Sedo Great Domains Auction Results

Sedo’s June Great Domains auction ended yesterday, and it resulted in the sale of 36 domain names. The largest sale was Expecting.com at $49,999, and that was followed by Wardrobes.com at $20,600.

The full list of sales is below, although you should keep in mind that they may not have all been paid by the buyers yet. If you had an interest in a name that didn’t sell or meet reserve, you should get in contact with Sedo to try and work out a deal, since it’s likely the name is under contract with the company.

June Great Domain auction results:
expecting.com 49999 USD
wardrobes.com 20600 USD
riyal.com 10099 USD
today.net 9500 USD
hairstylists.com 4000 USD

My Picks for Today’s Brannan’s Auction

The Brannan’s auction is ending today, and I want to share my top five names based on the posted reserve prices. The company is using Proxibid to host the auction, so you’ll need to sign up for an account to place any bids.

I asked David Clements, founder of Brannan’s for his thoughts on the auction. “We worked hard to bring domain buyers good deals. I feel really good about the 50 names we have for sale. If anyone reading this needs inventory, we’ve got names and we’ve got them at low prices, too.”

I also asked Clements how he thinks the auction was going to play out, and he was very optimistic. “We expect a lot of activity and bidding is going to be interesting to watch since our auction ends today. Our Returning Visitor percentage has spiked so the same people are coming back again and again to decide what they want to bid on. I think that this is going to be Brannan’s best and biggest auction to date.”

My top five picks for the auction are the following names:
