Less than a year ago, Eric Borgos announced that he acquired the Yachts.com domain name for $350,000, and he shared his plans for the business he intended to build on it. Andrew Allemann labeled it a “gutsy move,” and I agree considering the global Covid pandemic limited travel for quite some time.
This morning, Sedo broker Frank Tillmanns announced that Yachts.com was sold via Sedo. Frank mentioned the deal was co-brokered by Andrew Miller:
I reached out to Frank via email this morning to ask the price, and he let me know the domain name was sold for $600,000. Not including commission on the deal, the profit was $250,000 in less than a year. That’s an exceptional ROI.
Yachts.com is registered under Whois privacy at GoDaddy. I am unsure if the current website is Eric’s or the buyer’s because this website has existed since at least March, according to Archive.org. The title of the website is “The Yacht Metaverse.”
When added to DNJournal’s year to date sales report, this will likely be one of the top ten public sales. I have also added it to the list of recent one word .com sales at Embrace.com.
Update: Eric published a blog post this morning with more details about the sale.
I made a blog posting today with the details of the sale at https://impulsecorp.com/yachts-com-sold . The site you see up there now is my site, although it is more just a demo. At one point I had boats for sale and charter listed on the site but eventually changed my plans for it.
Congratulations Eric. After more than 30 years, the generic .com have the longevity and trust to be considered stable assets. Perfect timing.
Thanks!
Congrats on the sale…. But undervalued in my humble opinion. The right end user may have paid more. The cars.com case study is a good reference.
That’s a great story Eric, and while I’m sure you’ve never dabbled in any of the new gTLD’s, I had just purchased the domain Yachting.link a few of days ago. Since Yachting.com is an active site operating for sometime, i felt someone might like the name Yachting with an extension that makes sense. Anyway, if you were able to add value with some of your ideas for use of Yachting.xxxx i’d find a way to reward you handsomely. btw, i owned a 40ft Tiara that I use to cruise up and down the ICW on, so I do know a little about Yachting:) Thanks for sharing your story.
Thanks, I will keep Yachting.link in mind.
Congratulations to Eric, he is a super nice guy. I love reading his blog, too. I am very happy for him!!!
