What Is Broncos.com Worth?

I am sure you’ve heard the news that the Broncos.com domain name will be coming up for auction during the TRAFFIC conference in a couple of weeks. According to organizer Rick Schwartz, “the reserve is less than half of what Cowboys.com sold for a few years back,” (which was $370,000, as recorded by Domaining.com).

The most obvious buyer would be the Denver Broncos NFL team, which currently uses the longer DenverBroncos.com for its website. According to Forbes, the Broncos team is worth nearly $1.2 billion, so it can afford an acquisition like this. The question is whether or not the team believes it would add value to them since it’s not like someone would be able to compete with them if they don’t purchase the domain name. Frankly, they don’t exactly need the domain name, but it would be a great opportunity to shorten their current url.

There are other suiters for the domain name as well. Plenty of high schools, college, amateur and pro teams throughout the world are nicknamed the Broncos. For instance, Boise State University sports teams share the Broncos nickname, and the Idaho Statesman reported that the University athletic department projected “$34 million in operating revenue.”

Clearly, this domain name is a valuable asset, and I am curious what you think it is worth. I don’t expect you to project the sale price because we don’t know who will be bidding on the domain name at auction, but you are welcome to share what you think this particular domain name is worth.

I invite you to

Above.com Brings TRAFFIC Auction Online

Above.com Logo

This morning, I learned that there will be an online component to the domain auction that is being held at the TRAFFIC conference in two weeks in Ft. Lauderdale.

Victor Pitts from Above.com sent me a note today to let me know that his company will be sponsoring the TRAFFIC conference silent domain auction. It’s not a traditional “sponsorship” though. Above.com is hosting the silent auction on its Domain Marketplace platform.

TRAFFIC Auction Accepting Admissions

Rick Schwartz announced that he is now accepting domain name submissions for the TRAFFIC auction. The live auction will take place on  October 21, 2013 at 4:30pm during the TRAFFIC conference in Ft. Lauderdale.

The auction will try to focus on higher quality domain names. I assume there will also be higher quality domain names listed with reserve prices (like the Bouquet.com sale in Las Vegas).  As has become the norm with TRAFFIC domain auctions, there will be no online bidding, but phone or text bids will be accepted, as will pre-bids. Rick also mentioned that there may be a silent auction, and more details will be provided at a later date.

Rick shared a list of ten rules you must follow if you would like to have a domain name listed in the auction:

What’s Up With TargetedTrafficForum.com?

Screen Shot 2013-08-31 at 5.20.18 PMSeveral years ago, Rick Schwartz ran a popular private domain forum called  Targeted Traffic Forum. For years, it was one of the “go to” spots for good discussions with professionals who were successful in the business of domain investing. In 2008, for a variety of reasons, Rick shut down the forum.

For some reason,  TargetedTrafficForum.com looks like it’s a Japanese website that doesn’t appear to be related to domain names at all.

According to the Whois record, the domain name was created in January of this year. It is currently registered

TRAFFIC Announces Move to Fontainebleau Hotel in 2014

For the past few years, the TRAFFIC conference has been held at the Ritz Carlton Hotel in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. The conference is coming up in a few months, and it will again be held at the Ritz Carlton October 20-23.

This morning, Rick Schwartz announced that the conference venue is changing beginning with the October 2014 conference. Citing an increase in business and activity in the domain space (both current and expected), the conference will be held at the  Fontainebleau Hotel, located in Miami Beach, Florida. The  Fontainebleau is a cool hotel with a ton of ballroom space, good restaurants, and nightlife venues.

Here’s part of what Rick had to say about the venue change in this morning’s email:

Howard and I are positioning T.R.A.F.F.I.C., the show that MEANS
B.U.S.I.N.E.S.S., as the Intersection of all the domain-related shows to come. The
shift will be moving away from ICANN meetings as they become less relevant and towards the entrepreneur. The focus then becomes marketing and sales and not legislative.

This will spawn all types of splintered meetings, self promoting events and small groups and that makes doing business expensive and time consuming.

So with that in mind and hundreds of gTLD’s coming into existence that will require extreme marketing, Howard and I are proud to announce our 2014 and 2015 T.R.A.F.F.I.C. shows will be in a hotel that can handle the volume and size of what is coming.”

TRAFFIC will also be held at the Bellagio, presumably around the same time as this year’s conference, which was held in June.

It’s good to see Rick’s optimism about the domain space, and hopefully the busy summer will continue into the fall.

Earlier this week, Rick Schwartz announced that nominations are due for the 2013 TRAFFIC Awards, which will be given out at the TRAFFIC conference in October. You are allowed to submit nominations through 6pm (eastern) tonight. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the awards.

Awards might be cheesy to some people, but it was very cool to have received the award for best blog in 2010, and it was an honor to be nominated in previous years.

The award categories are listed below. You are allowed to nominate one person or company for each category, and you can’t (and shouldn’t) nominate yourself:
