Domain Sales

Active Sellers: Be Cautious of This Situation

I am an active domain seller, and I list my domain names for sale in several places, including forums, aftermarket marketplaces, and via private offers. I just realized I nearly put myself in a bad situation, and I want to make you aware of the potential for this type of situation.

Last week, I put a domain name for sale on a domain forum with a buy it now price. The name was also listed on Sedo, and it received an offer significantly lower than my BIN price on the forum a couple of days ago. I counter offered the buyer, he counter offered me, and I made one more counter offer, to which I have not heard back.

At this point in time, I am interested in selling this domain name quickly, so I was about to reduce the price on the forum. Just as I was going to do that, I realized I could get myself into a jam.

If I were to reduce my price on the forum and someone buys it, the counter offer I made on Sedo would still be available for that buyer to accept my offer. Should that happen, I would have two people who rightfully agreed to buy the domain name at my asking price, and I would obviously only be able to follow through with one. It would be an ethical dilemma that at best would leave a stain on my reputation, and at worst, it could lead to legal issues.

If you have an open negotiation thread at Sedo or other marketplace, you should probably not try to sell the domain name elsewhere at the same time. It’s a bit frustrating that I can’t cancel the negotiation from my control panel, but if I was a buyer contemplating a purchase, I would want to retain all the time given to me.

If you have more than one sales thread or outstanding offer, you need to retain control over them all, or else you could find yourself in a bad predicament.

BloomfieldHillsRealEstate.com – Giving Real Estate Agents Another Opportunity

A while back, I wrote a post discussing how I don’t believe many real estate agents really understand domain names. I’ve had very limited success selling domain names to real estate agents, and it’s also been difficult for me to sell ad listings to real estate professionals on my city .com domain names.

I am taking another shot at selling a real estate domain name to an end user buyer. As with all of my domain sales to end user buyers, my sales pitch is quick and to the point.

You’ll notice that I don’t mention a sales price in the email. I like to see how many replies I receive before naming my price. If I receive 10 replies, I believe it means there’s greater demand for this one of a kind domain name, and the price will likely be higher. Similarly, if I only receive one reply, my price will likely be more affordable, knowing that my prospects are more limited.

With domain names I am not developing, my business model right now basically revolves around quick/frequent domain sales. The most important factor for me is the price I paid to acquire the domain name, and I am happy to make a quick but profitable deal, even if it’s not a home run.

Here’s the email I am sending to prospects:

Good afternoon,

I saw that you sell real estate in Bloomfield Hills, and I want to reach out to you about a domain name my company owns:  BloomfieldHillsRealEstate.com.

Since I decided not to develop this domain name, I am now looking to sell it.  Would your company be interested in acquiring the domain name?

Regards,
Elliot

The domain name was sold to a company in Michigan this morning and is now pending escrow at Escrow.com.

Did Apple Buy Other Cloud Names from Xcerion, Too?

It appears that Apple’s reported purchase of iCloud.com for $4,500,000 from Xcerion  has been confirmed by All Things Digital in a report today. Assuming it’s confirmed by the company, possibly in a SEC notification, it will likely be ranked the #1 domain sale of 2011… unless there is more to the reported sale than just iCloud.com.

Reading about the sale made me interested in seeing if Xcerion owns other cloud-related domain names, aside from CloudMe.com, which is what the company intends to rebrand itself as. If Xcerion  does own other cloud names, perhaps Apple bought those, too., If Apple did buy more than just iCloud.com, it probably won’t be reported as a single domain sale.

From my research, it appears that Xcerion also owns these domain names:

I don’t know if Apple purchased any of these additional names, but it would seem that iCloudApps.com might be a name they would want, too. Additionally, iCloud.org and iCloud.us would make nice throw-ins as well if they were available. iCloudMusic.com would certainly seem to be a name of interest, as would iCloudNews.com. All of these names appear to still be owned by Xcerion, as does iCloud.com.

Does Apple need any of these extra domain names? I can’t speculate without knowing what iCloud.com will be, but it would seem unlikely that Xcerion would need them in light of rebranding, and it would seem silly that Apple wouldn’t try to get all of these domain names as part of the main deal. There are likely additional iCloud domain names owned by Xcerion that I didn’t notice.

I guess we’ll find out soon enough exactly what Apple bought.

Afternic Records Over $550k in .com Sales

Last week, Afternic recorded about $564,000 in public .com domain sales of $1,000 or more.  Two out of the three sales above $10,000 were Afternic DLS sales, not owned by NameMedia companies.

I think the sale of Tagalog.com at $12,000 was a great deal, considering it’s the language spoken by up to a third of the population in the Philippines, and it’s the second language of nearly everyone else. Here are the publicly reported .com sales of $1,000 or more from Afternic last week:

Seeking Offers on BikeTour.com & BikeTours.com

0

I recently acquired BikeTour.com and BikeTours.com from two different owners, and I am interested in selling the pair of domain names. I believe BikeTours.com would be a great domain name for a travel website that offers bike tours in cities around the world, and the singular would be a great name for a company or organization that organizes large scale bike tours, such as the 5 Boro Bike Tour.

There are a large number of websites that use “BikeTour” as the keyword domain name. The following tld are all registered: BikeTour.net, BikeTour.org, BikeTour.biz, BikeTour.us, BikeTour.info, BikeTour.fr, BikeTour.asia, BikeTour.me, BikeTour.mobi, BikeTour.co.uk, BikeTour.co.il, BikeTour.ru…etc. This of course does not include domain names like 5BoroBikeTour.com or others that have BikeTour in them. Similarly, there are a number of domain names with BikeTours in them

If you are interested in making an offer, please send me an email or post a comment with your offer, which I likely will not publish for privacy reasons. If you just want to write a comment about the pair of domain names, please don’t as I would like to keep it strictly a sales thread instead of a discussion thread.

Just for a bit of background on the offer status, I’ve already turned down $4,000 and the offer would need to be significantly more. I don’t plan to break up the pair.

National Association of School Nurses Acquires SchoolNurses.org

6

NASNI am very pleased to announce that the National Association of School Nurses has acquired SchoolNurses.org, a domain name that I owned for about two years. The organization currently uses the NASN.org domain name for its website.

Although the purchase price for the domain name is not being disclosed, the National Association of School Nurses did make a significant contribution to the Ronald McDonald House, helping my wife and me reach our fundraising goal.

I am happy that this domain name is going to be used by the NASN, and I wish them all the best with it!
