A 6 figure ccTLD domain sale was announced this morning, and I want to share it with you. According to a press release I read, “domain name broker, dtrade, has successfully closed Australia’s largest domain name transaction in 2013, over cruises.com.au, valued at $110,000 AUD (approx. $102,000 USD) in a cash deal.”
The buyer is an end user company called Ozcruising Pty Ltd, and the company currently uses Ozcruising.com.au for its corporate website.

I read an article on Washington DC’s CBS affiliate’s website discussing how some “sugar daddy” websites have seen an influx of signups since the government shutdown. I am sure there are domain investors with affiliate accounts that are benefiting, and I am wondering if the government shutdown may drive some aftermarket domain sales.
I would think that a job loss would cause people to have less expendable income and perhaps hurt the domain aftermarket. However, the government shutdown is not a typical situation where people lost jobs. It’s actually a situation where government employees are not permitted to work. They aren’t being paid for the time being, so money may be tight, but chances are good that they have money saved.
These government employees probably assume they will be paid when (not if) the government reopens, and perhaps some will realize that now is the time to start that business online that they had been putting off. If the business fails, they’ve lost their investment. If the business succeeds, they could leave their jobs down the road.
Knowing that they have a paycheck coming at some point in the future, I bet some of these embargoed employees will take steps to create a new business during this shutdown. I suspect that some of these hundreds of thousands of people will purchase their ideal domain name in the aftermarket. I wouldn’t be surprised to see an uptick in private domain sales as well as new domain name registrations.
While some people may be content signing up for an account on a sugar daddy website hoping that someone else will foot their bills for them, I bet others are going to look at this shutdown as an opportunity to start a new business. Maybe that will lead to an uptick in aftermarket sales.
I’ve had a few offline discussions with friends about the DL.com auction. In my opinion, DL.com is the best domain name to come up for auction in a while and it will fetch a solid price. There are plenty of great names for sale at any given time, but I don’t see many exceptional names at fair reserve prices on auction.
There have been great keyword domain names of course, but I think 2 and 3 letter names are more liquid than just about any other types of domain names, although you might be hard pressed to find a buyer in the mid or 6 figure range on a moment’s notice for this one.
Keeping in mind that I might participate in the DL.com auction, I am wondering what you think final sale price of the domain name will be in the Hilco Streambank auction. The opening bid is $200,000, and the online auction will be held October 14-17. Vote below and see what others think.
I came across a keyword .com domain name that was being used by a publicly traded company as a mini portal to sell one of its products. The product did what the keyword domain name is, but neither the product nor the website were branded as the domain name.
I thought it was neat to see the company using a descriptive domain name to market one of its services, and I realized it’s most likely only for SEO purposes rather than marketing purposes. To clarify, the company isn’t sending people to this website but they are hoping people find it via Google instead.

I recently loaded a large group of domain names for sale on Afternic. In order to set the pricing, I did what I usually do… looked at my purchase prices and thought about what I think would be a fair sale price, and I set the prices based on those two factors. My gut feel might not be the most efficient pricing model, but it’s done me fine so far.
Shortly after the names were priced and approved, I did a couple of searches on Afternic for keywords related to my domain names, and I saw other domain names listed for sale. Some of the prices varied drastically, and it’s going to make me review the prices I set for some of my domain names. I think you should do this competitive research, too.
