Richard Lau Gives WaterSchool Update

Water SchoolThe WaterSchool is "a global non-profit organization with a mission to provide simple, safe, strategic, and sustainable clean water and sanitation solutions to the developing world." The organization receives a considerable amount of funding from people within the domain name space, and I believe its largest individual fundraising event is the Water Night party held during NamesCon.

Domain industry veteran Richard Lau serves as the Executive Director of The WaterSchool. In an email sent this morning, Richard shared an update about the organization's achievements last year. Here's what Richard shared with newsletter subscribers about the organization's 2016 activities and accomplishments: (more…) → Read More

Water Night Raises $90k for Water School

Water SchoolWater Night is the annual party thrown at the end of NamesCon to raise money for the non-profit Water School. Conference sponsors and NamesCon attendees join together for a party at the Havana Room in the Tropicana Hotel, and proceeds from the event are donated to the Water School.

Yesterday evening, the Water School tweeted out that the event raised about $90,000 in funds. The Water School also mentioned that this amount of money will help 2,500 families:

One of the most fun part of the night is the "water shave," where several members of the domain industry volunteer to have their heads shaved to raise funds for the Water School. This year, participants included (more…) → Read More Appears to Have Sold

In my daily DomainTools registrant alert email, I noticed that appears to have changed hands. The domain name was privately registered and it is now registered to DNStination Inc., the privacy proxy registration details for MarkMonitor clients.

I reached out to Richard Lau, whose company owned, to ask him if the domain name sold. Unfortunately, Richard could not comment. He did tell me, "I can say I'm happy. And that I think Mark Monitor is a great, very professional organization to work with." My guess is that it sold (likely for high 6 or quite possibly 7 figures), but I presume this is a deal that will never hit the DNJournal sale report. was acquired by Richard's company for (more…) → Read More

How I First Learned of Richard Lau

Yesterday afternoon, Richard Lau posted an article about NamesCon, a domain conference taking place in January that he is organizing. I want to share a brief story about how I heard of Richard, who I have come to respect over the last several years.

In August of 2007, I received an email from a strange email address:

Dear Domain Buyer,
I want sell my domain name [""] , If you intersted to buy this domain, please send your offer in USD."

When I did a Whois search and then a historical Whois search (more…) → Read More

Why NamesCon?

NamesConHaven't domain conferences come and gone? With no sign of DomainFest aka WebFest, and with numerous other domain conference brands having been moth-balled, why would a veteran of the internet name space want to risk so much of his own capital to launch a brand new show? Wouldn't you have to be crazy to enter this space?

To answer that question, I hope you will indulge me for a few paragraphs. My name is Richard Lau and I am that person....

I'm proud to announce NamesCon Las Vegas 2014 will be held in Las Vegas, Nevada on (more…) → Read More
