ICA Opens Nominations for 2024 Lonnie Borck Memorial Award

0

Shortly after the untimely and unexpected passing of Lonnie Borck in 2016, the Internet Commerce Association (ICA) named an award in his memory with the approval and participation of Lonnie’s family. Each year since, the ICA has continued to honor Lonnie’s memory with the Lonnie Borck Memorial Award.

The Lonnie Borck Memorial Award honors someone from the domain name business who deserves recognition for making an “exceptional contribution to fostering a sense of community within the domain name industry.” Anyone from within the domain industry can nominate another domain industry participant who they believe is deserving of the award.

You.ai Sold for $700,000 via Sedo (Updated)

Sedo published its weekly domain name sales report today, and the largest sale was You.ai, which transacted for $700,000 USD. The domain name was sold via Sedo’s platform rather than through a SedoMLS partner.

This sale sets the public record for .AI domain name sales, according to NameBio. Prior to the $700,000 sale of You.ai, the largest .AI domain name sale was Stack.ai, which sold for $258,888 earlier this year via Afternic. The next highest sale was the sale of NPC.ai for $250,000. That domain name was also sold this year via Sedo.

How to Remove Unauthorized Listings from Sedo

1

It is frustrating to see a domain name I own listed for sale on a sales venue without my permission. Sometimes these listings are from a prior owner, sometimes they are done in error, and sometimes they’re fraudulent. Not only can this prevent a domain registrant from listing names that are already listed, a potential buyer could see the name listed for a lower price and have that price in mind when subsequently negotiating a purchase.

When I see one of my names listed for sale somewhere without my permission, I quickly contact my account manager or the support team to request the removal of the listing ASAP. Every sales venue has a procedure for reporting unauthorized listings.

Buyers Should Appreciate “Squatters”

Many people confuse domain squatting with domain investing. Some use the “squatter” term pejoratively, but others simply refer to people who hold portfolios of domain names as domain squatters. They’re not trying to be rude, but they don’t understand the difference between the perfectly legal business of investing in generic domain names vs. the business of monetizing trademark domain names, also known as cybersquatting. To many, it is one and the same.

People looking to buy domain names bristle at the fact that their coveted domain name is owned by a domain investor. “Squatter!” they might comment somewhere in anger. Nevermind the fact that the domain name has been registered for 20+ years and matches the name of hundreds of other companies. They’re angry because a domain investor has something they want, and the price seems high to them.

ParkingCrew Announces New Beta User Interface

This morning, domain name parking service provider ParkingCrew announced a new user interface was launched in beta. The company made it clear that the UI is still under development, and it is not the final version that will ultimately be released. Instead, the company is seeking user input to optimize the utility of its UI for customers.

Here’s how ParkingCrew believes users will benefit from using the new user interface:

LUV.com Acquired by Owner of Matrimony.com

In July, Rick Schwartz announced that he reached a deal to sell the LUV.com domain name for seven figures. The announcement was made on Rick’s private Twitter/X account, and he shared the value of the deal. Using DomainTools’ Domain Monitor tool, I was able to see the domain name status changed as it was unlocked and pending transfer.

This week, Rick announced the deal closed and the domain name and funds changed hands. If you visit LUV.com right now, you can see it forwards to Matrimony.com.
