Google Change May Impact Expiry Domain Market

Millions of dollars are spent each year acquiring expired and expiring domain names at auctions. Domain name registrants let their domain names expire, and people – including domain investors – will bid on them when they are offered for sale via auction or drop catching platform.

There is a segment of domain name buyers who seek out expired domain names for SEO purposes. They may either try to build a website on an expired domain name to capitalize on traffic from inbound links, or they may choose to redirect the domain name to another website for the “SEO juice” given off by these expired domain names.

Igor Gabrielan Shares Story About Registering .AI Domain Names in 2011

From what I’ve read on Namepros and elsewhere, I believe Igor Gabrielan must hold one of the largest portfolios of good .AI domain names. I think his portfolio of domain names can be found at ai-names.com, which links to an aged thread on the PR.ai forum. I don’t know if that list is current, but it is quite lengthy and contains some strong domain names like Apps.ai, Assistants.ai, Competition.ai, Library.ai….etc.

I don’t think I’ve ever communicated with Igor, and I don’t know much about him. He shared a story about what it was like to register .AI domain names back in 2011, and I thought it was pretty interesting.

Beware of GoDaddy Phishing Email that May Target Squadhelp WLM Sellers

1

BrandLabs shared a warning post on Twitter this afternoon. While the email appears to be targeting Squadhelp sellers who utilize their White Label Marketplace (WLM), it is something anyone should be wary about:

According to the person who posted the warning, the email address that received this phishing email is used exclusively within his WLM website. Further, in order to see the email address, someone would have to click the contact us link. I am not sure if this means the person behind the phishing effort clicked the contact button or has an automated way to do it.

Lnvestor.com Coming Up for Auction (Again)

Elad Nof shared a screenshot that auction participants at NameJet and SnapNames should note:

When you look at the title of this blog post, the spelling of this domain name coming up for auction is obvious. If you look at it in all lower case though, lnvestor could appear to be Investor. When browsing through auction lists quickly, I can imagine why someone might get confused. A quick glance along with tens of other bidders with backorders and others might follow suit.

Hilco Digital’s Andrew Miller on .AI Domain Names

Andrew Miller, Managing Director of Hilco Digital Assets, is someone I chat with on a regular basis. In addition to general discussions about domain names and the industry at-large, I will occasionally connect with Andrew to do a sanity check when acquiring a valuable domain name or when I am evaluating a substantial offer. Andrew has been involved in the domain investment space for many years, and I take his insights seriously.

Yesterday, Andrew shared his 100th “Random Sunday Thoughts” post on LinkedIn. In his first point, he discussed .AI domain names as investments. As you know, .AI domain names have become the biggest topic of discussion amongst domain investors. It appears that many companies in the AI space have been using .AI domain names, and each week we see sales reports with .AI domain names amongst the leading sales.

I think Andrew offered some good food for thought. With his permission, I am sharing his commentary below:

Namecheap CEO on Registry Price Increases

2

Namecheap CEO Richard Kirkendall has always spoken his mind freely. The other day, I replied to someone who asked about why domain registries raise their fees. I think it’s pretty clear that they raise their fees because they can and because the want to increase their revenue.

Richard’s response to this was better than mine:

Richard has a good point. Once a user is using a domain name, it can be very expensive, risky, and time consuming to switch domain names. Most won’t do it over the inconvenience of a renewal fee increase.
