How Much Overlap on AI Domain Name Creation?

I sold a two word .com domain name for $4,999 via Afternic last night. The domain name consists of a noun and a verb, and I acquired the domain name for less than $200 in 2018.

Because it’s more of a brandable domain name than an actual term, I think there are similar types of domain names out there that have not been registered. In fact, DomainLeads.com shows only two SLDs registered in the domain name I sold – my .com and the .org domain name. Put simply, I believe this could be fertile ground to explore alternative domain names.

To that end, I used AI tools to try and come up with similar types of domain names I could search in bulk. I would then be able to do some additional research to assess whether any of the available terms are worth registering.

To do this, I asked Grok and ChatGPT to “Create a list of 50 .com domain names similar to [Domain].” Both platforms provided a list of 50 domain names for me to search.

I am curious how much overlap you think there were between the two platform search results.

For what it’s worth, there were 12 total domain names available to hand register. None of them made enough sense for me to register. I’ll probably expand the list of domain name results to see if 100 or 200 produces any results that are worth registering.

  1. Just tried Domainleads.com for the first time. Neat, basic tool.

But I’m pedantic and I noticed their terminology isn’t technically accurate. From their User’s Guide:

“SLD – Part of a domain that comes before the dot (extension).”

Ackshually, the SLD is the second label from the right. Consider domains with 3+ labels, like “foobar.co.uk”: “uk” is the TLD, “co” is the SLD , and “foobar” is the third-level domain (3LD).

So what is the best generic term to describe the leftmost portion of a domain name? SLD is not accurate in all cases, but still widely used in the industry. Prefix? Subdomain? Label? I don’t think there is a consensus on this, but there should be 🙂
