My eyes bulge out of my head sometimes when I see a somewhat obscure term in a domain name coming up for auction. Oftentimes, the term isn’t well-known by others, and even with the ease of searching Google to understand why it has bids, people won’t understand its popularity as much as someone in the know.
Yesterday, I came across a tweet from someone who shared a graphic of a domain name sales email from Afternic:

I had never heard of the term “Cootie Brown,” but according to Wikipedia, it “is a name used in metaphors and similes for drunkenness, mostly in the Southern United States.”
I was born and raised in New England, and I was unfamiliar with the term – despite owning Cooter.com. Had I seen it in auction, I may not have even bid on it even if I learned the meaning because I wouldn’t have much insight on the popularity of the term. Andy did and it paid off.
The most valuable domain names tend to be pretty obvious terms that almost everyone would know. There are also plenty of more obscure terms that can be acquired relatively inexpensively and resold for solid margins. You always have to pay close attention to what is coming on the market.
The long tail is magical my friend.
99% of my domains are hand reg years ago using the 99cent gd coupons
Love it
Found the niche long ago and laughing all the way to the bankS $$$$ right now
some domains are words spelled out in english but mean something in another language. there was one that sold for quite a lot a few years ago (in the UAE I think it was).
