My Thought Process on Afternic vs. Dan.com

I list nearly all of my inventory quality domain names with BIN prices on Dan.com and/or Afternic. The majority of these domain names utilize the Dan.com BIN landing page. I want to share my thought process behind why I choose the Dan.com landing page and why I prefer to list names separately on both platforms.

When I list a domain name for sale on Dan.com with a BIN price, it syndicates to GoDaddy and its sales network. A prospective buyer searching for a domain name on GoDaddy’s website – or a partner like Namecheap – will see my domain name sale listing whether it is listed on Dan.com or Afternic.

If the domain name is not listed directly on Afternic with the LTO option enabled, the prospective buyer won’t have the option to buy it with a payment plan even if that option is available via the Dan.com landing page.

Here’s how the registration path looks without LTO enabled at Afternic:

On the other hand, if the domain name is listed for sale on Dan.com and Afternic, and I allow LTO for the purchase at Afternic, here’s how the registration path looks:

This is why I like listing my inventory domain names at Dan.com and Afternic, particularly if the LTO option is enabled.

When it comes to landing pages, I still choose Dan.com for my .com inventory domain names nearly all of the time. The exception to this is if I run into verification issues that I don’t want to spend time resolving. I find it is sometimes easier to get a name verified on Afternic than Dan.com. For my non .com inventory, I use Afternic since my Embrace.com emblem is shown on my landing pages, and Embrace.com is exclusively for .com domain names.

The reason I choose the Dan.com landing page is because of the way the domain name is displayed. Using FeedingGood.com again as an example, you can see the two landers.

As you can see, Dan.com uses camelcase, so the domain name displays better, in my opinion. This is especially important when a domain name has 3 repeating letters – like WellnessSuccess.com or when the domain name has more than 2 words. Please note the Afternic lander is not the BIN landing page I wanted to show because I kept getting “Error
Something went wrong, please try again” messages when I attempted to change it this morning.

I believe the solo GoDaddy logo on the Afternic landing page is stronger than the joint Dan.com and GoDaddy logo on the Dan landing page, but taking all factors into consideration, I believe the purchase process and flow at Dan.com is smoother and faster than Afternic. Put another way, if I had a choice to buy a domain name with an Afternic lander or Dan.com lander, I would choose Dan because I have found their payment process and transfer support is better and faster.

When you have a domain name listed for sale on Afternic or Dan.com and utilize Afternic or Dan nameservers, you’ll pay the same 15% sales commission no matter how the domain name is sold in the GoDaddy ecosystem. I’ve never had enough inventory, time, or interest in doing A/B testing to see which lander performs better. At the end of the day, it may not even matter all that much if someone really wants to buy the domain name.

This is how and why I choose where and how to list my inventory domain names.

  1. The reason why I prune my fruit tree is to have the best quality fruits and get rid the others.

    Quality over quantity

So why have 3 brand names??
    Adds confusion

    • On multiple occasions – including this AM when writing this article, I have had issues selecting a different landing page designs for domain names through Afternic.

I have also found it more time consuming to add and verify names on Afternic than Dan.com. Sometimes it works right away and sometimes it does not. Dan is far more easy to set up.

It is frustrating to win an auction at GoDaddy Auctions, have the name provisioned to my GoDaddy account, and still get a verification error when adding a 3rd nameserver:

  2. Nobody cares about my company’s brand name. So, there’s no need to have my brand name on my landing pages.

Buyers care about trust. They trust the GoDaddy brand. When they buy from an Afternic BIN landing page, all they see is the GoDaddy brand and that the landing page is housed on a GoDaddy.com URL. That’s the most trustworthy situation for the buyer. They have no need to worry about the Afternic brand, the Dan brand, or my brand. It’s all GoDaddy saying “this is the price of the domain name if you want it. Take it or leave it. Need help? Call this number.”

To me, that is the optimal buying experience for the buyer. My brand only hurts the experience; it does not help the buyer at all.
