No matter where I am or what I have planned for the day, I spend some time looking at upcoming domain name auctions. The time I spend varies depending on my schedule, but on a regular workday where I am at home, I will probably spend between 1-2 hours on domain auction research.
In order to find domain names I am interested in buying, I primarily use 3 domain investing tools for research. If you use additional tools, I invite you to share them in the comment section below.
Dropping.pro – This is a paid tool I use to get emailed lists each morning with certain parameters I set. I created a few different filters with terms or specific types of names I am looking to find. If domain names are coming up for auction that day, I will receive an email with a list of names that matches the filter parameters. This is a paid tool, and I believe I pay about $50/month for it. I’ve been using this tool for a very long time, so the plan pricing may have changed. Notably, I also use this tool for other things like finding leads if/when I do outbound.
ExpiredDomains.net – I have quite a few search filters created here for different platforms and marketplaces. There is quite a bit of overlap between what I see here and on Dropping.pro, but each also identifies domain names uniquely. I’ve tried to create filters in a way that there is a bit less overlap and more results for me to manually filter through. This is a free tool, and I believe they rely on affiliate revenue so I click through.
DotDB – I have always felt that there more domain names registered with a specific keyword in them, the better. DotDB is a free tool that allows me to quickly see how many registrations exist for a specific keyword. For instance, there are 34 DomainInvesting .TLDs registered, and there are 72 domain names with “DomainInvesting” in them. I use the free version which limits the number of searches, but there are paid accounts available for users who want more – and likely better – data.
Bonus:
DSAD.com – Several times a week, I will look at DSAD.com for their list of domain names coming up for auction. I also enjoy reading the stories shared and appreciate what goes into running their website. The only downside as a bidder, IMO, is that names mentioned there tend to sell for higher prices because of the exposure. This highlights the popularity of the website and is helpful for the platforms and sellers.
Peter Askew – I have to give a shout out to Peter Askew who occasionally highlights and shares domain names coming up for auction that could be developed. Like with DSAD, highlighted domain names tend to pop in auction and many of them get renewed prior to auction. That said, Peter’s X account is well worth a follow – and probably more for the stories he shares than for the auctions.
This may be common sense, but in addition to these tools, I also spend time looking at the platforms to see what domain names already have bids. This identifies the most popular domain names coming up for auction, and if I don’t have time for research, I will take a quick look at the platforms themselves.
