Earlier this morning, Richard Kirkendall shared that Spaceship hit the 1 million Domains Under Management (DUM) mark. Richard is the Founder of Namecheap and its sister registrar, Spaceship, which came out of beta just over a year ago:
We’ve just surpassed 1 million domains under management at @spaceship! We launched in open beta just about 14 months ago. I believe it took us about 5 years to reach this milestone at Namecheap. Big thanks from all us to all of you, our customers that have chosen us and trusted… pic.twitter.com/21hhsPSH5J

Following Richard’s comments, the Spaceship PR team shared some data about the domain names registered via its platform. Some of the data was surprising to me. Here are some of the facts that caused me to do a double take.
- Only 13% of newly registered domain names on Spaceship were .com.
- .Shop domain names were the most popular domain names registered by percentage, with 28% of new registrations.
- The top 5 locations of Spaceship customers are US, China, India, Singapore, and Hong Kong.
What I would find most interesting is seeing some of the new registration stats at Namecheap, which I believe has a more retail oriented customer base. It would be very interesting to know if the new registration trends seen at Spaceship are primarily domain investor related – and potentially skewed – vs. its sister registrar, which I believe has many more businesses as customers.
Hitting 1 million domain names under management in a year is a major milestone.
RichardK. Or CoachK should thank me for marketing spaceship.
This time I will waive my marketing consulting fees.
I have been saying good things about spaceship
Spaceship is probably mainly used by domain investors from what i can see.
I stayed with NameCheap for my .Com domains.
Namecheap should change the name to SpaceShit…oops.. sorry skinny oily fingers…SoaceShip
