Trafficz: Yahoo Imposes “Revenue Cap” on Certain TLDs

I received an interesting email from Trafficz  this evening that I want to pass along to you regarding a recently imposed “revenue cap” on certain domain extensions, including .CO, .US, and .TV. If you park at a company that uses a Yahoo feed, it may impact your ability to monetize certain domain names.

According to the email sent to Trafficz clients:

“We would like to inform you that Yahoo!, our primary upstream provider, has recently imposed a revenue cap on certain TLDs. The affected TLDs include:

.biz
.co
.info
.tv
.us

The new, conservative revenue cap was rolled out early this morning and will be imposed on a per domain, per day basis. Specifically, if a particular domain in one of the above-referenced TLDs exceeds the revenue cap on any given day, Yahoo! listings will cease to be displayed on that domain for the following three days, at which point they will resume displaying as normal. This change was made across the board and will affect all Yahoo! partners.”

As a result of this new change, it seems that if your “revenue cap” is exceeded, you will stop earning revenue since the ads won’t be displayed for three days. I’ve never heard of a change like this, but it would seem to indicate that perhaps domain owners should consider parking domain names with these extensions at a company with a Google feed (or monetize them in another way, like development).

I didn’t hear anything from Parked, but since I believe they also use a Yahoo feed, this may apply to names in those TLDs parked there as well.

The only reasons I could guess for this change is that Yahoo thinks the traffic quality is poor, there is more click fraud on those particular TLDs, or the traffic is foreign and doesn’t convert as well. I really have no idea though.

Breaking: Rod Beckstrom Leaving ICANN in 11 Months

1

ICANN

ICANN President and CEO Rod Beckstrom just announced (via Twitter) that he is leaving ICANN. According to his Tweet, Beckstrom intends to leave the organization in July of 2012.

Under Beckstrom, ICANN recently approved the gTLD program, with the applications expected to be considered in the next several months.  Beckstrom became President and CEO of ICANN just over two years ago in July, 2009. You can read more about Beckstrom on the ICANN website.

A full press release with the announcement is expected soon.

Sedo Sells Nearly $700k in Domain Names: G.biz Re-Sold for $30k

3

SedoSedo sold in the ballpark of $700,000 USD worth of domain names last week, with SelfEmployed.com selling for $58,000 and FoodTruck.com selling for $30,000. Rome.net was also a pretty strong sale, as it went for $30,000.

G.biz was sold for $30,000. Interestingly, Francois Carrillo from Domaining.com bought G.biz for $9,400 in September of 2009, via Sedo auction. Although the domain name is currently pending transfer and under privacy, I would not be surprised if Google bought it, especially in light of its acquisition of G.CO.

Here are Sedo’s publicly reported sales from last week:

Domaining.com Now Pushing Updates

I keep a whole bunch of Internet browsers opened at all times. This afternoon, I noticed a (1) in the title section on the Domaining.com tab in my browser. I went over to check out what it meant, and I saw a message that said “1 new headline – Click here to watch it!.”

Looks like a neat new feature on Domaining.com that allows you to keep it on your browser without having to refresh the screen. When a new post gets added to the feed, you just have to click the notification button and the next post gets pushed on to your screen.

It’s sort of like how Twitter updates your live feed, although Facebook pushes the updates without having to refresh. Cool feature – and useful to know when new articles are live on Domaining.com.

I would recommend that Francois change the message to “1 new headline – Click here to view it!”

UPDATE: Toby Clements Announces VIP Newsletter for $1,000/Year

I received an email from Toby Clements this morning announcing a change in his popular domain sales newsletter. In response to a friend that asked to see his list of domain names before sending the email newsletter to his 15,000 subscribers, Clements opted to create a VIP subscription newsletter.

The VIP list will cost subscribers $1,000 per year, and it will be limited to a maximum of 50 subscribers.

Clements went on to explain, “This VIP group will get our newsletter by 6pm ET the day before the launch. It will have all the names and prices, therefore you will have the shot of buying the names quicker than most… If you are a regular buyer of mine then there is no question that you have missed deals being we sell names so quickly. This simple solution can help fix that problem. You will still need to be quick, but only quicker than 49 other people rather than over 15,000 of them.”

*** Update ***

It appears Toby has decided against this:

This morning we announced plans to offer an exclusive pre release membership. We have had an astounding amount of feedback on this membership and after much discussion have decided not to follow through with this. Most of you have voiced your opinions on why it is and isn’t a good idea and after weighing all opinions we feel it is better for all of our subscribers to not implement this membership.

Why Are They Coming Out Now Against gTLDs?

16

Over the past couple of weeks, a number of organizations have issued strongly worded press releases condemning ICANN and the gTLD program. Among those who have criticized ICANN was the CEO of the International Advertising Bureau (IAB) and the CEO of the Association of National Advertisers (ANA).

According to Randall Rothenberg, CEO and President of the IAB, “There appears to have been no economic impact research, no full and open stakeholder discussions, and little concern for the delicate balance of the Internet ecosystem.”

Bob Liodice, President and CEO of the ANA stated that, “Brand confusion, dilution and other abuses also pose risks of cyber predator harms, consumer privacy violations, identity theft and cyber security breaches. The decision to go forward with the program also violates sound public policy and contravenes ICANN’s Code of Conduct and its undertakings with the United States Department of Commerce.”

While Rothenberg and Liodice are of course entitled to their opinions, I am surprised they were not more vocal about their beliefs during the gTLD approval and discussion process that went on for a number of years. Many companies and organizations provided commentary, and there were plenty who opposed the gTLD program.

I am sure one opinion would be that it’s better to oppose this late than never, but it’s strange to see. What were some organizations waiting for to comment? I can’t believe they didn’t know about the program or know how to participate. That just wouldn’t make sense that such large organizations didn’t realize this was taking place.
