Daily Poll: Are You Attending NamesCon 2018?

NamesCon 2018 is coming up at the end of the month in Las Vegas. My flight is booked, my ticket was purchased (a long time ago), and I am excited to attend this annual event attended by hundreds of domain investors from around the world.

Today’s poll question is: Are You Attending NamesCon 2018?

But first, I want to share a special offer with you. If you have never attended NamesCon and have not yet bought your ticket, today is your lucky day. I am giving away 5 conference passes to people who have NEVER attended NamesCon in the past. If you haven’t been to NamesCon before and you know you can make it to the January 27-31 conference, post a comment and I will be in touch. This offer is valid for the first 5 people who post a comment who have not been to NamesCon. Update: The 5 tickets have been claimed.

Final NamesCon Sale Before Conference

A business colleague from New York emailed me a week ago to ask if I have a NamesCon discount code. I did not have one to provide for him, but the conference organizers just announced one “final sale before the conference.”

Until Tuesday, January 2, people can save 50% off the current conference pass rates. The two tiers of prices are $399.50 for the standard pass and $574.50 for the VIP pass. This does not include the EventBrite booking fee. NamesCon 2018 will be held in Las Vegas January 28 – 31 at the Tropicana hotel.

If you haven’t bought your NamesCon ticket yet, now is probably a good time. The discount code is located within the NamesCon tweet:

New Format for WaterNight

2

WaterNight is arguably one of the most popular events held during NamesCon. WaterNight raises funds for the WaterSchool, an organization that provides sustainable clean water solutions in Africa. The Water School is supported by many people within the domain industry, and NamesCon founder Richard Lau is the Executive Director while Gregg McNair is on the Board of Directors.

During last year’s WaterNight event at NamesCon, $90,000 in funds were raised for The WaterSchool. Since its inception, this fundraising event has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for the WaterSchool, and it has brought additional publicity to the organization within the domain industry and beyond.

This year’s WaterNight is going to be different than prior years. The change was made based on feedback from attendees. Richard Lau emailed me to give me a bit of a preview and let me know the format:

“We are changing things up a bit and making WaterNight a more elegant and exclusive event. It will be a dinner setting with a classic Las Vegas lounge band, and a celebrity comedian. We will have a silent auction section, and the dinner will be enjoyed in a sit-down setting. Entry will only be for guests with reserved seating – and most tables are an intimate setting of 7 people.”

The NamesCon agenda has additional information about WaterNight:

NamesCon 2018 Auctions Up on NameJet

The NameJet live and silent domain name auctions are starting to take shape on NameJet. If you visit NameJet from now until the end of February (give or take), you can see the “NamesCon” link in the top menu. Clicking that will take you to the current list of domain names that have been entered into the auction.

At this point, it is unclear what domain names will be included in the live auction and what domain names will only be in the silent auction, but it is probably fairly clear which domain names are the best of the bunch right now. Knowing how this works, I am pretty sure this is only a preliminary list, and more domain names will be added to the auction as we get closer.

In my opinion, 10 of the best names include the following domain names, as of the time of publication:

NamesCon Offering 50% Off Tickets for Black Friday / Cyber Monday

As we get closer to NamesCon, the ticket prices rise and the discounts generally fade. From now through November 28, NamesCon organizers are offering a 50% discount on ticket prices in honor of Black Friday and Cyber Monday. In addition to offering a discount on the cost of tickets, NamesCon is also offering a discount on some of the remaining sponsorships that are available.

In case you missed it, I published an interview with Soeren von Varchmin, who recently became the President of NamesCon after the conference was acquired. Soeren answered several questions about the conference and what attendees can expect. NamesCon is the largest domain industry event held in the US (and possibly the world) each year.

NamesCon 2018 will be held at the Tropicana Hotel in Las Vegas from January 28 – January 31, 2018. Visit the NamesCon Black Friday page to get the promo code discount.

NamesCon Auction Details and Submission Info

With the NamesCon 2018 conference a few months away, the domain name auction is starting to take shape. Monte Cahn from Right of the Dot is helping to organize the auction event, and he shared some details about the auction as well as some information about submitting domain names to be sold via auction.

Monte shared these details about the types of domain names that are being sought out for the auction:

“I am looking for the best super premium .com names – meaning key words, dictionary terms in proper tense, N, NN, NNN, L, LL, LLL, etc. These will be at no and low reserve to drive as much bidding competition and bidding excitement as possible.

Although there will be some new TLDs, we will not get most of those from submitters, some will come from the registries and some from registrants but we will not allow any names with premium priced renewals or crazy tiered pricing, etc. But point is, that I am not looking for new TLDs from registrants yet for the auction – just super premium .com names for now.”

The auction will be run using NameJet, and the live auction will be held on
