Benefits of Attending a Conference

I try to attend as many domain industry conferences as my time permits. It’s a great way to meet people in the industry, and the benefits extend beyond the conferences. I wanted to share a story that just happened last week to illustrate this.

At TRAFFIC  a year ago, I had the chance to meet the guys from Domain Holdings and get to know them a little better. I knew several of the people who worked there, but being at the conference allowed me to learn more about the company and the people who work there. We’ve been in touch since, discussing various opportunities as they come up.

I just returned from a “vacation” in south Florida. I say vacation in quotes because this business never sleeps, and as you could see from my blog posts over the last couple weeks, I was doing some work most days.

I decided to take a drive to Delray Beach to see the guys from Domain Holdings while on vacation. I had no agenda, and I wanted to go and shoot the shit about business for a couple hours.  While in the office, I was asked if I had any names for sale, and I mentioned a recent acquisition and let them know I was in the midst of a private negotiation on the name. I was told that they could probably get my asking price if I gave them a bit of time.

I let them know I intended to continue negotiating with my buyer, but if they could get me my asking price ASAP, I’d sell if I hadn’t reached a deal privately (clearly had I agreed to sell it to my buyer even for less, I would have done so).

The next morning, I was told that they have a deal with their buyer if the name was available, and since I hadn’t come to terms with my buyer, I agreed to move forward with them. The name is now in escrow and is awaiting payment.

From a few meetings at TRAFFIC, to a chance meeting in Florida, to a nice sale, I want to reiterate the value of attending conferences to get to know other domain investors personally.

Know Someone Who Can Benefit from a Free Ticket to Domaining Spain?

This is a guest post from Jodi Chamberlain, one of the organizers of the Domaining Spain domain conference, which will be held April 25th to April 27th, 2013 in Valencia, Spain. I am going to try to make the conference and perhaps we will see each other there!

Domaining Spain is the largest European gathering held each year in Valencia. Domainers from all over the world meet in Spain to discuss relevant industry news and search for new business opportunities.

Spain 2013 will be the center stage for discussions around the release of the new gTLD’s and a place to learn more about what the industry is doing to prepare for all the new domain names. You’ll find registry’s searching for partners to collaborate with and other service providers advertising   on how they too can be of service!

Valencia is the perfect place to network, it’s a clean modern city which offers not only historical walls to explore but a happy cultural way of life to become accustom to. Did you know most people within the city take siesta’s everyday (a nap)?!? Now, that must be why everyone is so happy!

If you know someone who could benefit from an event such as Domaining Spain we’re looking to give a way a few free tickets to those who are most deserving. If you know someone who deserves to network with the industry’s biggest movers and shakers and would like to place their name into a drawing for a free Spain 2013 ticket, please send all inquires to: Jodi@32events.com. Be sure to let us know why this person deserves a ticket to Spain and together, we can make a few dreams come true!

Please visit http://domainingspain.com/ to learn more about the upcoming Domaining Spain show.

All tickets are 50% off this month with 10% of all tickets proceeds going to The Water School.

2013 GeoFutr.com Geo gTLD & Geodomain Conference Announced

Patrick Carleton, formerly the Executive Director of Associated Cities, and Josh Metnick, Chairman and CEO of Chicago.com, Inc. and founder of Associated Cities, have announced a new venture in the geodomain space:  GeoFutr.com Geo gTLD & Geodomain Conference.

The conference, scheduled for the Fall of 2012, will cater to domain registries, Geodomain and GeoTLD operators and investors, hotel, travel and tourism entities, municipalities and governments, brands and advertisers with local reach as well as digital professionals and service providers.

Sponsorship opportunities are currently available for companies that are interested. The conference agenda and speaker list have not yet been published.

Press release follows:

TRAFFIC Las Vegas Dates Announced

Earlier this year, Rick Schwartz and Howard Neu announced that they were considering adding a Las Vegas TRAFFIC conference to the 2013 calendar (in addition to the October conference in Florida).

TRAFFIC has been held in Las Vegas before, but it has been a few years since the last event (I think the last one was 2009, when the domain industry conference calendar was packed).

After reaching out to people within the domain industry for feedback on holding a Vegas conference, the conference organizers confirmed that Las Vegas would be a venue, and TRAFFIC will be hosted by the Bellagio Hotel. This morning, Rick Schwartz announced that TRAFFIC will run from Wednesday, May 29, through Saturday, June 1 (closing breakfast).  Ticket prices and ticket sale dates have not yet been announced, but I am sure those details will likely be forthcoming in a few months.

TRAFFIC Ft. Lauderdale will be held October 7 – 10, 2012 at The Ritz-Carlton. Conference tickets are currently selling for $1,595.

Will DomainFest Continue?

I’ve heard mixed reviews about this year’s DomainFest Global conference, although the majority of them were positive. As I mentioned before, I canceled my trip a few days prior to the conference to tend to some things at home (all is good here). It’s the first DomainFest I missed in four years.

The big news, it seems, was Oversee.net’s sale of Moniker and Snapnames, which was sort of announced during the conference, although it wasn’t officially announced to customers until yesterday. With the sale of these two assets, I wonder if DomainFest will continue in the future – both the main conference at the beginning of the year and the smaller local events held later on in the year.

As I recall, last year, the DomainFest website had links to the local conference agendas and dates for upcoming DomainFest events. As of right now, the only event listing is the most recent event that passed. I would have assumed Oversee and conference organizers would have the local events listed already since people need to make travel plans in advance. Maybe they will be added soon. Hopefully that will be the case.

I have no idea if DomainFest is a profit center or if it loses money but is written off as a marketing expense. If the former is the case, I would certainly assume that DomainFest will continue. If the events lose money, the sale of Moniker and Snapnames could spell the end for DomainFest, since Oversee would have less reason to put on these events, as Domain Sponsor is now the primary client-facing line of business for Oversee.

Personally, I hope DomainFest continues. The only two certainties on my business calendar are DomainFest at the end of January and TRAFFIC in October. There are other events that take place throughout the year, but those two conferences are really the only firm events on my calendar.

I reached out to Oversee to ask about future DomainFest events but I have not heard back.

Guest Post: Domaining Spain

This is a guest post from Jodi Chamberlain, who is helping to organize the Domaining Spain domain conference coming up in April. Ordinarily, I would likely be attending the conference, but I am expecting to become a parent a few weeks earlier, so it’s not in the cards.

This is the 4th annual Domaining Spain conference, located in Valencia. This event brings together 120-150 guests from all around the world.

From April 26th – 28th domainers will gather at, Hotel Sercotel Sorolla Palace  to discuss the gTLD’s, ccTLD’s and domain markets.

This is an important event for both the American and European entrepreneurs, it’s an opportunity to build international networks and meet the top leaders in the industry. Some of the Domaining Spain speakers for 2012; Kathy Neilson, Paul Keating, Sergey Gorbunov, Braden Pollock and many, many more!

Industry leaders will speak about domain sales, development, parking, business risks, and discuss the next 5 years within the industry.

Highlights for the event; Sessions, keynote (To be announced soon), awards, networking and let’s not forget Spain’s infamous Paella!!

The 3 day pass will cover all sessions, food and networking activities. Show tickets are on sale now for just 300euro until 1/15 on the conference website.
