Ken WisnefskiMuch can be said to the point of branding and creating an identity for an organization.   In the online arena, this takes on a whole new form.   From basic fundamentals of a domain name and brand management, the identity that business owners create for themselves are meant to be impactful, lasting and speak to the organization.   Each year, there is a tremendous amount of research conducted to determine the best ways to manage a business’s reputation.   Stimulating demand for a product and service, creating an emotional attachment for consumers and innovation are common principles that allow business owners to create an effective branding strategy in the market place.   These principles remain the same and at the forefront of successful online branding.

The advent of the internet allows business owners and influential individuals to start at the very beginning with registering a strategic domain name.   Since this speaks to the brand itself, the more important side to consider is that this becomes the label.   The term “label” can provide tremendous opportunities however can also easily misfire as well.   Labeling the organization takes careful consideration and strategic planning.   Still, after these basics are completed, business owners need to start focusing on their brand management practices.

Brand management plays a major role in helping consumers decide what to do.   That is, more than 88 percent of consumers research a brand online before they engage.   Engagements range from creating a conversion (email, phone call, visiting the website) and even purchasing the product or service.   Globalization is increasing and businesses no longer just compete with local businesses but with businesses in other countries.   Innovation and technology has allowed firms to compete on a global level and reach consumers outside of their primary markets in order to create additional revenue and sales opportunities.

The fact is, however, that many business owners are unaware of the importance of online brand management.   Most of these individuals are set in their ways and are used to the way businesses once competed.   Simply put, these individuals have not fully embraced change.   Global commerce is growing and today’s consumer is more intelligent that yesterday’s.   Consumer buying behavior has equally shifted.   Simply put, the consumer of the modern era generates interest in a product or service, then goes online to research and formulate their own opinion before making the choice to purchase that good.   Traditionally, consumers would rely on the knowledge of the in-store sales person or even on word of mouth advertising from their close network to gain perspective of a product or service.   Today however, there is an online community of more than 7 billion people that actively use the internet each day (statistics gathered from Internet World Stats).

The fact of the manner is that business owners must pay attention to their brand identity and their online reputation.   If not, somewhere there is a potential customer that is paying attention for them.

After Acquiring RH.com Domain Name, Restoration Hardware Rebrands as RH

Restoration Hardware Rebrands as RHOn the heels of acquiring the RH.com domain name from Media Options, Restoration Hardware, an upscale home goods and home fashions store, has announced that the company has undergone a rebranding effort. Restoration Hardware will now be known as RH, and the company’s website can be accessed by visiting RH.com.

This news was announced in a press release on September 17, 2012:

Restoration Hardware today announced the rebranding of the Company to RH, reflecting the current positioning and future direction of the brand.”

In the press release, Gary Friedman offered some insight into why the company changed its branding from Restoration Hardware to RH:

Gary Friedman , RH Creator and Curator commented, “Today’s RH is a far cry from the hardware and nostalgic discovery item based business it once was. Currently, we circulate four Source Books twice yearly, RH Home, RH Big Style Small Spacesâ„¢, RH Outdoor, and RH Baby & Child totaling over 1,400 pages of inspired design.” Mr. Friedman continued, “The new branding positions us for the future and reflects our belief that we can curate a lifestyle beyond the four walls of the home.”

Purchasing RH.com was not only a wise move to help consumers navigate to the company’s website, but it’s now an integral part of the RH brand. Without the domain name, it likely would have been much more difficult for the company to rebrand.

Snoop Dogg Secures SnoopLion.com

I just read that legendary musician Snoop Dogg has decided to change his name to Snoop Lion, and smartly, it looks like he was able to buy SnoopLion.com in advance of the announcement. According to a Whois search, SnoopLion.com was registered in April of this year, although it’s currently under privacy.

SnoopLion.com is a developed website with information about Snoop Lion’s upcoming album, Reincarnated. The musician secured the matching Facebook (Facebook.com/SnoopLion) account, although he needed an underscore for the Twitter account (Twitter.com/Snoop_Lion).

I often read about famous name changes where the person or group did not register the corresponding domain name, and that either caused them to buy a more obscure domain name or it led to a legal battle. Instead of having to pay someone who may have beaten him to the punch, Snoop Lion and his marketing team were able to buy the name for less than $10.

Interestingly, Snoop’s given name is Calvin Broadus, and CalvinBroadus.com is not owned by the musician, but it is parked.

Infographic: Tracking the Growth of NameCheap

I am a big fan of infographics because they do a great job of illustrating facts, and they’re more fun to look at than a chart or numbers.

NameCheap recently published the infographic below, which charts the company’s growth and identifies key milestones in its history. The company was founded in 2001 and it currently boasts over 3 million domain registrations. The infographic charts where NameCheap’s website visitors come from as well, its social networking prowess, and the brands the company operates.

I wish other registrars and companies in the domain space put out similar infographics. It’s a neat way to look at things.

Moo.com: Unique Advertising on Facebook

 

I’ve never heard of Moo.com before, but they seem to have struck up a unique advertising deal with Facebook. If you click on the small box next to “Contact Info” on a Facebook profile, a small box pops up with a message that says, “Moo.com makes it easy to print your very own set of custom business cards. The first box is free.”

According to its website, Moo.com is a custom business card printer based in Providence, Rhode Island. Moo.com was founded in 2004, and the company has “raised over $5m in venture capital from the Accelerator Group, Index Ventures and Atlas Venture, the investors behind Skype, Betfair, Lovefilm, Last.fm and MySQL.”

I did some Whois research, and it looks like the domain name changed ownership in 2006, which corresponds with the company’s blog post in May of 2006. Prior to that, the domain name appears to have been owned by a different party.

The company offers an affiliate program, so I wonder if Facebook is being paid for every order/customer. Whatever the case may be, it’s a neat domain name and creative way of marketing it.

Domain Industry Google+ Pages

I would imagine that Google is using the number of +1 a company receives as a datapoint for search ranking. I am pretty sure I read somewhere that your personal +1 influence your search results, but I am not sure if overall +1 numbers influence non-personalized results.

I did some research and I found many domain industry Google+ pages. I am sure these companies and websites would appreciate it if you gave them a +1, especially if it helps them with rankings.  If you use Google+, it could also be a good way to stay connected to learn about special offers and news.
