Manage Your Auction Wins

This post is spurred by a stupid mistake I made, and I want to share it with you so that it doesn’t happen to you.

For whatever reason, it seems that when domain names that I win at NameJet are pushed into my various accounts at domain registrars, they are unlocked and auto-renew is set to “off.” More often than not, I’ll ignore them and change the renewal status on them when I get around to it.

Yesterday, I discovered that I accidentally let a domain name expire after paying a few hundred dollars for it in 2011. Stupid mistake. Luckily, it is in redemption status so I can renew it for a premium price to avoid having it re-sent to auction.

I don’t know why registrars don’t automatically set domain names to auto-renew and locked when they are pushed to your account, but it’s something you need to know.

  1. Registrars can’t set domains to auto-renew as they don’t have your credit card details. And Namejet is not allowed to “push” this info to them.

Unless you are referring to a specific registrar where you have already set auto-renew to on for all your domains there. But the registrar must have a account option of putting all new domains to auto renew on.

  2. Elliot, which registrar was it? After I won some names on Namejet they’re within different registrars now, so it’s just what I was thinking of today – should I move them under 1 preferred registrar? Thank you

  3. I actually find it annoying when registrars automatically set it to renew.

I just went through this with Network Solutions and Register.com — they had set some domains to auto-renew after I had wanted them to expire. Only way to disable was to call them! Why not just make it simple to do online instead make me wait on hold for 10min just to through to a rep!

  4. Thanks for this perspective, Elliot.

I know GoDaddy and Namecheap both have auto-renew. At first I didn’t like it, like Scott, but I’m comforted knowing it’s there as absent minded as I can be. 🙁 But just to be on the safe side, I think I’ll check in on my accounts.

    Thanks, Elliot.
