Namecheap Ups the Ante for 2015 Move Your Domain Day

Since 2011, Namecheap has held its annual Move Your Domain Day, which has raised nearly $250,000 for the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF). This year’s Move Your Domain Day will be held on January 27, 2015, and Namecheap has a special offer to increase the amount of money raised for the EFF.

There are three fundraising tiers based on the number of domain names transferred to Namecheap and hosting plans purchased. The company’s donation to the EFF will vary depending on the tier that is hit. The full details are below, but this has the potential to raise much more money for the EFF than in years past.

In addition to the fundraising aspect of this event, Namecheap will be hosting a Reddit AMA to answer questions people may have about the company. The AMA will begin at 11am (EST) on January 27th, and it will be hosted by Richard Kirkendall, founder and CEO, with the username NamecheapCEO.

Here are the fleshed out details that were provided to me for Move Your Domain Day 2015:

Namecheap Holding Annual Holiday Twitter Trivia Contest

If you follow Namecheap on Twitter, you’ve probably seen the company post trivia questions today. I saw the questions, and I visited their website to see what was happening and at stake. In case you aren’t aware, Namecheap just began its annual holiday Twitter trivia contest, and the company is giving out prizes for answering correctly.

Here’s how the company describes the trivia contest on its website:

Namecheap Sponsoring Water Night During TRAFFIC Conference

Just as the company did at WebFest, Namecheap is once again sponsoring a Water Night party to benefit The Water School during the TRAFFIC conference in Las Vegas. WaterNight will be held at  PBR Rock Bar on  Wednesday May 29th, 2013, and the ticket cost is a donation of $50. The price will increase as it gets closer to the event.

The open bar is paid for by Namecheap, allowing all funds raised to  be donated to The Water School.  DJ Crykit, a popular Las Vegas DJ, will be playing the event. There will be  Bull Riding, Giant Jenga, and lots of networking.

Namecheap Holding Earth Day Promo

0

Namecheap, a domain name registrar known for its fun promotions, is currently offering a special Earth Day domain transfer promo. People interested in transferring domain names to Namecheap can use one of two special coupon codes to transfer .com, .net, .org (and others) domain names for $5.99, and in addition to saving money on the transfer, they will help raise funds for an environmental group of their choosing.

Customers can choose to help the Rainforest Alliance by using the coupon code “SAVETHEFOREST” or they can help the WWF by using the coupon code “DONATE2WWF.” For every domain name transferred to Namecheap, the company will donate $1.00 to one of the environmental groups of your choosing, depending on the coupon code you used.

There is a bit of fine print (like only 10 transfers per person), so check out the promo page for all the details. I am not sure when the special promotion ends.

It’s neat to see a domain registrar run a promotion like this. It allows customers to save money and choose an organization to help at the same time. So far, the promo has raised just over $600 for the organizations.

Namecheap Warns About CISPA, Makes Another EFF Pledge

I haven’t heard much buzz about the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act (CISPA), and I suspect you probably haven’t either. In fact, if it wasn’t for a blog post by Namecheap, I probably wouldn’t know that it’s re-emerged.

Here’s how Namecheap has summarized the issue with CISPA should it be passed into law:

“CISPA, which emerged in 2012, has been rebirthed this week as an  even bigger threat  to online freedom. If CISPA is passed, the US government gains the power to shut off Internet traffic and empowers the US government to ask your ISP about your online activities in the efforts to learn about possible cyber security threats and Internet attacks. Advocated under the premise of anti-terrorism legislation, this legislation is so broad that it threatens to endanger the privacy of every individual and ordinary and law abiding citizens. This act makes your private online activity now public, giving ISPs the right to share your personal information completely without your knowledge, due process, or authorization.”

As its done in the past, Namecheap is trying to raise awareness about CISPA by making a financial pledge tp the  Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF). For every tweet and re-tweet mentioning its blog post, Namecheap is pledging a $.10 donation to the EFF. If you register or transfer a .com, .net, or .org domain name to Namecheap, you can save $1.00 using promo code CISPAalert, and in addition, the company will donate $.10/name to the EFF.

Not only is this a great way to get people to know about CISPA, but it also shows Namecheap’s marketing prowess. Over the last couple of years, the company has donated over $100k to the EFF as a results of efforts such as this.

If you’d like to read more about CISPA and what others are saying, I encourage you to check out the following articles on the topic:

Namecheap Infographic Illustrates Impact of “Move Your Domain” Day

2

In January, Namecheap held its second (and now annual) “Move Your Domain” Day, and the company offered special prices and a donation pledge to the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) in an effort to induce inbound domain transfers.

By the end of the day, customers transferred nearly 30,000 domain names to  Namecheap, and that raised a total of $44,311.50 for the EFF.

This evening, Namecheap (which is also sponsoring Water Night tonight on behalf of the Water School) shared an infographic with more information about its Move Your Domain Day. The graphic offers insight including the following information:

  • What registrars lost the most domain names (Go Daddy)
  • Countries where the most transfers came from (USA)
  • Most transferred TLD (.com)

There was additional cool insight on the infographic. Check it out below or visit the Namecheap blog for more information.
