Domain Auctions

My Picks for the Domain Madness 3 / Boxcar Auction

DomainMadness.comThe Domain Madness 3 auction being held on the recently re-launched Boxcar.com has opened for bidding. The live auction will take place on April 5th in Las Vegas. You need to be registered at Boxcar to bid, and there’s a $1.00 fee to register, which is presumably to ensure that you have a valid credit card.

I am still 50/50 on whether I will be at the event, and if I’m there I will try to cover it live for you. Bolded below are my favorites for the auction.

I don’t have any domain names listed in this auction, and I didn’t do any Whois searches to see if I know the owner.

Sedo’s Travel Auction Begins Today

SedoSedo is running a travel-related domain auction beginning this afternoon (March 24) at 1pm EST and running through March 31, 2011.  There are over 225 domain names in this auction, and all of them are related to travel (or could be related to travel). There are many ccTLD domain names included in this auction, and some of the prices are in Euros instead of dollars (so keep that in mind if you decide to bid).

My 5 favorites from the auction include:

  • Philadelphia.org 25,000 – 49,999 USD Reserve
  • HotelNews.com 25,000 – 49,999 USD Reserve
  • VisitPanamaCity.com 5,000 – 9,999 USD Reserve
  • HolidayBlog.com 1 – 499 EUR Reserve
  • Touring.com 25,000 – 49,999 USD Reserve

What are your thoughts on this auction? Do the ccTLD domain names make sense, and how do you think they’ll do?

Diaclaimer: Although I own several VisitCity .com domain names, I do not have any domain names in this particular auction. I may bid on one or more domain names, and the link to the auction is NOT an affiliate link.

Snapnames .TV Auction Ends Soon

.TV auctionThe Snapnames / Moniker .TV auction that is being run in conjunction with Mashable (which started during the SXSW conference), is coming to a conclusion today. I listed my favorite domain names in this auction in a previous post.

It’s impressive to me that so many of the names in auction (around 75%) have received bids. I am pretty surprised that the bids aren’t higher since we’re talking about many 2 and 3 letter  domain names. I don’t really follow the .TV market much since I don’t own any .TV domain names (to my knowledge), but the prices seem very low to me at this juncture.

With just about two hours remaining in the auction, here are the auctions with current bids (see the site for updated bids):

Aftermarket.com On The Ball

Aftermarket.comOne thing I find frustrating after live domain auctions is the time it can take to get updates from the auction house on payments and/or domain transfers.

It’s not unusual to see transactions reported in DNJournal 2, 3, and 4 months after the auction closed. I know it’s not always the fault of the auction house, but it can be annoying. especially on large sales when cashflow is important.

This does not appear to be the case with Aftermarket.com, the company that just concluded its Domain Rountable conference auction, grossing roughly $200,000.

In the DRT live auction, my company sold HorseStable.com and HorseCorrals.com. Although I didn’t get as much as I hoped, the pair of domain names did sell. I was hoping for $4,000+ but I realize these are not necessarily names for domain investors, so likely my bad for not finding end user buyers.

Within a day after the conclusion of the auction, I had an email from Aftermarket.com.  The email had all the information I needed to push my domain name to the Aftermarket.com escrow account at Moniker, and it also informed me that a transfer had been initiated at Network Solutions for the other domain name. In under 12 hours, Aftermarket.com took possession of the two domain names.

The Aftermarket.com auction was captained by Omar Kubba, brother of Ammar Kubba, whose company operates Aftermarket.com. If it wasn’t for Omar’s unsolicited email a few weeks ago, I probably wouldn’t have even submitted these two names for the auction. From the opinion of an outsider, Omar has managed the auction quite well, and I want to him praise for his efforts.

Assuming the buyer makes a timely payment, the auction should be squared away very quickly.

I don’t generally auction my names because of the significant exclusivity periods and long waiting time between auction and payment, but Aftermarket.com’s auction (from an operation point of view) has been one of the best run in quite some time.

Wills.CA Up for Auction on Pool

I just received an email from Pool announcing the auction of a pretty good legal domain name – Wills.CA. From the email I received:

“Get the domain that’s all about planning ahead. Wills.ca is now available until March 24, 2011.

With an increasingly aging population and an eye to planning, now is the time to secure this valuable domain name. Visit the Wills.ca auction page to make your bid.”

The starting bid on this domain name appears to be $20,000. The auction will conclude on March 24, 2011. I believe you’ll need to have a Canadian presence to own this domain name, although I believe you can have a proxy in Canada as well.

Moniker / Snapnames Holds .TV Auction

.TV AuctionMoniker will be holding an auction for .TV domain names on Snapnames beginning this afternoon at 12pm (EST). The auction will end on Wednesday, March 23rd at 3:15 pm. It looks like Moniker has been advertising with Mashable, and the company has a special .TV promotion during the SXSW conference in Austin.

I’ve been hearing quite a bit about .TV domain names, and I expect this auction will do very well, especially the two letter domain names that have low reserves. I actually might try to buy my first .TV domain names via this auction, although that remains to be seen.

It looks like there are some pretty good names in the auction, and my selections are bolded below:
