India Domain Market is Growing

India is the second largest country in the world with over 1.2 billion people living there. It makes sense that the domain market in India is growing.

This morning, CIOL.COM published an interview with GoDaddy Vice President and Managing Director for India, Rajiv Sodhi. CIOL is billed as “India’s premier business technology community network.” Sodhi discusses the current state of the domain name market in India, and he offers some of his thoughts on domain name investing in India. I think You will want to read the interview in its entirety, but the jist of it is that there is tremendous potential for growth in India.

There are currently two domain name conferences on the calendar for later on this year in India.

Name Ninja Has the Cure for “Domain Squatters”

I spotted this photo of Bill Sweetman on Twitter yesterday. Sweetman is the founder of Name Ninja, a domain name consulting company, and he is attending the International Startup Festival in Montreal this week.

Although it is a bit jolting to see a domain name industry expert / consultant wearing a shirt that refers to “domain squatters,” I think it a creative way to get attention (and presumably business). There are many people who consider domain investors to be “squatters,” and I would imagine that quite a few startups at #StartupFest couldn’t get their ideal domain name for their venture/

Creative Urinal Marketing From NamesCon

urinal soccer

The Domainers Choice Awards were held last weekend in Dana Point, California, and I wasn’t able to make it because of a wedding in New York. I was checking out some of the event photos, and I want to share a photo that Bill Hartzer posted on Flickr.

As you can see, NamesCon had a creative marketing tactic in the men’s restroom. Because of the World Cup that is taking place in Brazil, NamesCon outfitted the urinals with a mini soccer ball and goal,  and I suppose the objective of the urinal soccer game is pretty obvious. The “grass” was branded with the NamesCon logo.

I don’t know if they did something similar in the ladies room, but I did not see any photos of the ladies room in Bill’s photo stream.

I think this is a great attention grabber, and it’s also nice to see NamesCon sponsor a domain industry event.

What Conferences Are Worth Attending?

I assume that most people who are active in the domain investment space have attended a domain conference like TRAFFIC, DomainFest, NamesCon, or one of the other conferences that have gone on in the past. I know that domain investors also attend other industry conferences, and I am curious which ones you think are worth attending.

Some conferences that are popular amongst domain investors and domain industry companies include:

  • LeadsCon
  • HostingCon
  • AdTech
  • SES
  • PubCon
  • SMX
  • SXSW
  • Consumer Electronics Show (CES)

European Domain Conference Coming Up

Next month in Valencia, Spain, one of the largest non-US domain conferences called Domaining Europe  will be taking place at the Sorolla Palace Hotel. The event will be held from May 8 – 10, and the cost to attend is € 600.00 (a little over $800 USD). The sixth annual conference is being organized by  Dietmar J. Stefitz.

The robust agenda can be found on the event website, and it seems fairly heavy on gTLD and ccTLD discussions. There is a fairly diverse group of speakers who will be participating, and I think that is one of the benefits of attending this conference. It looks like there are also some very good networking opportunities.

Here’s how the event is billed on the conference website:

New gTLD Registries Doing Tradeshow Marketing

Shortly after starting my blog in June of 2007, I wrote about the idea of selling domain names at industry tradeshows, although I never even thought about new top level domain names when writing the article. At the time, I said this:

“Small business owners are accustomed to dealing face-to-face with account representatives from the companies with whom they do business. Much of their business is done with a handshake in person at a tradeshow – especially when opening a new account with a supplier. For the most part, this is impossible to do on the Internet. To many small businesses, learning how to successfully operate with the help of the Internet is a daunting challenge. Why not meet with these business owners in person, make them feel comfortable and win their business? All of this can be accomplished by attending industry specific tradeshows.”

Meeting with business owners at industry specific tradeshows could be a great way for domain sellers to connect with end user buyers. In most cases, this isn’t cost effective since most domain sellers don’t have enough inventory to justify the cost of attending and exhibiting at an industry specific tradeshow. New gTLD registries, on the other hand, have the inventory for targeted marketing efforts like this, and I believe they are beginning to do participate in these events.

Here are a few tweets I found from new gTLD registries that have been participating in tradeshow marketing:
