FaceTime.com Now Owned By Apple Ahead of Wednesday’s Event

Apple FaceTime

Many technology blogs and Apple fans are looking forward to the Apple event scheduled for tomorrow in San Francisco. It is widely speculated that the event will be the venue for an  announcement  about the newest version of the Ipad.

Some people have speculated that the IPad 2 may have a camera, which would likely enable Apple’s “FaceTime.” FaceTime is a popular application that allows video calls on the iPhone 4, the newest version of the iPod touch, and Mac computer to Mac computer using a wifi connection.

I just received a tip that in the last couple of days, it appears that Apple has taken possession of the FaceTime.com domain name. According to a Whois lookup as recently as February 20, 2011, FaceTime.com was owned by a company called FaceTime Communications, Inc.

As of this afternoon, the Whois information now shows Apple, Inc. as the current domain registrant for FaceTime.com. The domain name does not yet resolve to Apple’s website, so if you want to learn about FaceTime, you need to visit www.apple.com/mac/facetime.

I don’t have any idea if FaceTime.com will be a part of tomorrow’s Apple announcement, but the timing of the Whois change is interesting.

Thanks for this tip goes to to Mark over at SpreadOffense.com.

Xoom Goes After Motorola

22

Xoom LogoA couple years ago, I blogged about the company called Xoom, a money transfer service with a name that I think is pretty bad. It sounds like “zoom,” and is spelled differently. I didn’t and still don’t understand why a company would choose to have a confusing brand name.

It was even more surprising to me a few months ago when Motorola announced that it’s  tablet computer was going to be called Xoom (which went on sale today).  This was a head scratcher to me because “Xoom” seems like a made up term rather than a descriptive term.  I also can’t understand why a big company like Motorola couldn’t think of a better name and/or why they would take a risk of potentially infringing on another company’s brand name.

As you might expect, this has turned litigious. According to an article on Bloomberg this morning, the money transfer company has sued Motorola for trademark infringement. The case was filed in US District Court, Northern District of California (San Francisco).

Domain Name for Radical Football, Founded by Mark Cuban, Has Interesting Provenance

RadicalFootball.comMark Cuban announced plans for a new company called Radical Football, which is expected to compete with college football’s BCS. I will spare you the company details since you’re probably not interested in that, but the domain name history for RadicalFootball.com is very interesting.

In 2007, a company called Maverick Media purchased RadicalFootball.com. Interestingly, it does not look like Maverick Media has anything to do with Mark Cuban, since Cuban’s basketball team is the Dallas Mavericks. It appears the domain name expired in 2008.

NFL Players Association Preparing Public for Lockout with NFLLockout.com

1

NFL Players AssociationThe National Football League’s Players Association (NFLPA) is gearing up for a potential lockout as their dispute with NFL owners continues, and it appears that they’re taking it to the public. The NFLPA owns and is using NFLLockout.com.

The domain name was originally created in September of 2009 by someone who appears to be unrelated to the NFLPA, but the Players Association appears to have taken possession of the domain name in or around  March of 2010. Although it’s privately registered right now, it was recently registered to Richard Persons, the player union’s director of information services.

As a football fan, it’s interesting to see the NFLPA take this battle to the public in this manner. As much as I am a fan (big PATS fan), it’s difficult to take sides in a contract dispute with the mostly wealthy players and the even more wealthy owners.

I can commiserate with the players though. They may make a lot of money, but most only have a few years to play professional football, are battered on the field, and most get huge amounts of money right out of college, and I can only imagine how quickly my money would be spent if I was in that spot.

It is interesting to see the NFLPA use the NFL trademark in a domain name like this.

** Update**

Andrew previously reported that the former owner sold the domain name to the NFLPA for $25,000.

Go Daddy Releases First 2011 Super Bowl Commercial Clip & Reveals .CO Commercial to Air in First Half

Godaddy Super Bowl CommercialMore details about Go Daddy’s Super Bowl commercials have been revealed, and the company has released a clip of its approved Super Bowl commercial called “The Contract.” This commercial is expected to air during the second half of the Super Bowl.

The .CO-focused Super Bowl commercial will air during the first half of the game. The ad is expected to feature  a new Go Daddy .CO Girl, although the company has not revealed who the Girl will be.  I have been informed that current Go Daddy Girls, Jillian Michaels and Danica Patrick, will also appear in this commercial.

Go Daddy’s Super Bowl commercials always bring a lot of attention to the domain registrar, and I think it’s a good thing for domain investors.
