There was a unique UDRP filed at the World Intellectual Property Organization for a domain name that has 4 hyphens and 5 words! Jim Cramer (listed on the WIPO website as James J. Cramer) filed a UDRP against jim-cramer-charitable-trust-stocks.com. The UDRP is WIPO Case D2016-1756.
As you may know, Jim Cramer is a well known financial analyst and hedge fund founder who became popular as the host of CNBC’s Mad Money tv show. You can read more about Cramer’s background on Wikipedia.
The jim-cramer-charitable-trust-stocks.com domain name was created back in October of 2007. According to Archive.org, it looks like there has been a website on that domain name for quite some time. In fact, several photos of Mr. Cramer are on the website.
If Jim Cramer or his representatives weren’t happy with the owners of the domain name using his name in the domain name and photo on the website, it’s interesting that it took so long to file the UDRP. Maybe they didn’t notice the domain name was being used for a website (or didn’t care) until now – who knows.
One other interesting point is that the non-hyphenated domain name, jimcramercharitabletruststocks.com, is not even registered. According to DomainTools, that domain name has never been registered before.
When the UDRP decision is published, we may learn more about the history of the domain name and website.
UDRPs have become very mainstream the past couple of years. Maybe they didn’t know how easy the process is to obtain rights to a domain through the UDRP process.
This makes me remember my recent purchase (5 months ago):
Photoshop-tutorial.com
(i thought to develop it..but got busy in other projects)
Is there a cost to file the UDRP ?
Yes. $1,500 plus any legal fees if necessary.
The case was terminated (as of today when I checked) and the site is taken down.
