TRAFFIC Las Vegas Dates Announced

The TRAFFIC conference will be coming back to Las Vegas after a brief hiatus. Rick Schwartz announced that the conference will be held  Wednesday May 29 through Saturday, June 1, 2013 at the Bellagio Hotel.  Tickets will go on sale for the conference on October 9, and the early bird price will be $995. Early bird pricing will only last until the end of October.

It was also announced that the conference will take place in Las Vegas for at least the next two years.

I am sure there will be a hotel special at the Bellagio (the current Hotels.com rate is $212/night on average for the conference). If you prefer to stay elsewhere, five star hotels such as the Vdara and Trump International are currently priced at $159/night via Hotels.com. Steve Wynn’s Encore is only $274/night right now.

Las Vegas is one of my favorite cities and there are plenty of things to do there and some great places to eat. Hopefully the turnout will be strong.

TRAFFIC Seeking Awards Nominations

4

Rick Schwartz and Howard Neu sent out their annual request for nominations for the 2012 TRAFFIC Awards. They added a new category this year for Broker of the Year. As I mentioned last year, I think this it’s a good idea because good domain brokers bring millions of dollars of liquidity to domain owners, and not all brokers are cut from the same cloth. I think they should add a Domain Attorney of the Year category, too.

This year, nominees are being sought for the following categories:

  • Best New Monetizing Solution
  • Best Overall Domain Solution
  • The “We Get It” Award
  • Developer of the Year
  • Broker of the Year
  • Best Domain Blog
  • Sponsor of the Year
  • Domainer of the Year
  • Domain Hall of Fame

Nominations are due back to Rick and Howard by  6pm EDT on Wednesday, July 25th. I have been nominated a few times and won a TRAFFIC Award once, and it’s an honor to be nominated and selected by my peers.

The 2012 TRAFFIC conference will be held October 7 – 10 at The Ritz-Carlton in Fort Lauderdale Beach, Florida.

TRAFFIC Las Vegas Dates Announced

Earlier this year, Rick Schwartz and Howard Neu announced that they were considering adding a Las Vegas TRAFFIC conference to the 2013 calendar (in addition to the October conference in Florida).

TRAFFIC has been held in Las Vegas before, but it has been a few years since the last event (I think the last one was 2009, when the domain industry conference calendar was packed).

After reaching out to people within the domain industry for feedback on holding a Vegas conference, the conference organizers confirmed that Las Vegas would be a venue, and TRAFFIC will be hosted by the Bellagio Hotel. This morning, Rick Schwartz announced that TRAFFIC will run from Wednesday, May 29, through Saturday, June 1 (closing breakfast).  Ticket prices and ticket sale dates have not yet been announced, but I am sure those details will likely be forthcoming in a few months.

TRAFFIC Ft. Lauderdale will be held October 7 – 10, 2012 at The Ritz-Carlton. Conference tickets are currently selling for $1,595.

TRAFFIC Tickets on Sale Next Week

According to a tweet from Rick Schwartz, tickets for October’s TRAFFIC conference in Ft. Lauderdale will go on sale beginning next week. Instead of pricing them in tiers by order date, TRAFFIC organizers are pricing them by number of tickets sold.

Rick’s Twitter post stated, “T.R.A.F.F.I.C.Registration opens next week. 35 Tickets @ $995, 65 Tickets @ $1295, 100 Tickets @ $1495, 200 Tickets at $1795.”

The conference will be held at the Ritz Carlton from October 7 – 10, 2012. The Ritz Carlton in Ft. Lauderdale is a great venue located fairly close to the airport, and it is surrounded by a range of other hotels if you prefer to find a less expensive alternative.

As I did last year, I plan to purchase my ticket early, although it would be frustrating to buy them on the day they become available and learn that the first 35 tickets have already sold.

I am not sure if there will be a TRAFFIC Las Vegas this year, as Rick  contemplated  on his blog late last year. I would guess that there won’t be a show in Vegas this year, but I am sure we will know for certain in the near term.

2012 Targeted TRAFFIC Conference Dates Announced

1

With the 2011 TRAFFIC conference in the rear view mirror, the dates for the 2012 TRAFFIC conference have been announced. The conference will run from Sunday October 7th – Wednesday October 10th. Cabanas will open on Friday, October 5th for networking.

The conference will be held at the Ritz Carlton in Ft. Lauderdale, the same location as this past Targeted Traffic conference. I would imagine tickets won’t go on sale until January, but I am told they will be the same price as 2011, with a discounted rate for early purchase. Perhaps you can buy your ticket before the end of this year so you can expense them on this year’s tax return.

Although Rick Schwartz has discussed adding a second conference in Las Vegas, there has been no decision made. Personally, I like the idea of a Las Vegas conference, although I doubt I would spend much time away from the blackjack tables and restaurants.

My TRAFFIC Experience & Recap

I returned home from Ft. Lauderdale yesterday evening, and I want to share some of my takeaways from the TRAFFIC conference. Overall, the conference proved to be a great networking opportunity (as it always is) in an excellent venue.

–  Domain Holdings  made a very impressive showing. In a short span of time, the company has hired a number of people who are experienced in the domain industry and some from outside of the domain space. In fact, when I first arrived, I said hello to someone I know who has worked at a successful but covert domain company, and I was surprised when I saw his tag said Domain Holdings. I think Domain Holdings is a collegial team of experts who are working on products and services that target various segments of the domain business, and I bet you’re going to hear a lot about them in the next year.

– I had a productive meeting with Protrada about the company’s platform, and I am going to set up my account ASAP. I was given a walk through, and I think it is going to help me stay on top of potential acquisitions and auctions. If you haven’t checked it out yet, it’s quite comprehensive and well put together.

– I really appreciated the fact that GoDaddy was there and took the time to walk through the auction platform. I had some issues with it, and I was able to learn a few tricks while showing some of the areas of frustration.

– Sedo and Afternic announced news during the conference, which will help domain owners sell domain names. Afternic is partnering up with Godaddy and Sedo expanded its SedoMLS distribution channel. It’s going to pay to list your names on both platforms. I also had a nice conversation with Don Lyons, who let me know about Moniker’s new partnership with Afternic, making it easier to sell names.

– Whether you think adult sites are good or bad, .XXX domain names are good or bad, or whatever your feelings are related to the adult industry, I can tell you they have a smart team running the operation, and I think they are going to be very successful. I had a long and candid conversation with ICM Registry CEO Stuart  Lawley, and I came away impressed with the organization.

– The .XXX party at the W Hotel was fun. The venue was great, especially because it was so close to the Ritz Carlton.  I think the party could have been a bit more “adult” though 🙂

– I am glad that  Mike Mann was on the Test Track panel. He was very blunt when he needed to be and was entertaining by calling things the way he saw it. I think organizers need more vetting for Test Track to avoid no shows and to choose presenters with solid business plans.

– I want to wish Mike Berkens congratulations for Blogger of the Year. It’s very well deserved and certainly hard earned.

– I think there should be a Domain Broker of the Year category. I know awards aren’t that important to many people, but the broker side of the business helps bring in considerable revenue to domain investors, and some brokers are far superior to others.

– There was a guy who showed up at the conference with one of the most unbelievable lists of category defining .com domain names that made everyone’s jaws drop. Apparently, his father founded the company a number of years ago.

– The Ritz Carlton in Ft. Lauderdale was an excellent location to hold the conference. It was large enough that there was space to spread out and hold private meetings, but it didn’t feel like it was too expansive. The corridor outside the ballrooms was conducive to meetings, and to meet with companies that had booths. There were several areas (inside and outside) and restaurants for private dining and larger parties. In addition, there are a number of hotels within walking distance for those who don’t have a Ritz Carlton budget.

– Despite the three days of rain, spirits were still very high. People stayed at the venue for the most part, and there were many good opportunities to meet with other people and companies in the industry. I tend to take some time during the conferences to catch up on work/emails…etc, but I stayed at the venue almost the entire time.

– I am sure many people are just waiting until I discuss the auction. Actually, a lot of people will probably skip over this entire post just to write negative things about the auction. In any case, I don’t think it takes a genius to realize the results weren’t great. I think the .XXX sales were strong, although I wouldn’t have been surprised to see Movies.XXX sell, in light of a few other high dollar sales. Everyone seems to have an opinion on what went wrong and what can be improved, and I am going to stay out of that.

– As usual, the show organizers put on a professional trade show without many hitches. They’ve been at it for years, and I felt that the whole Traffic team made attendees feel welcome and appreciated.
