It’s FREE… except for the beer!

I’m kicking off a meet up group for people in the DC area who invest in domain names or who work in related industries and buy and sell domain names for themselves or clients.

Anyone who wants to learn more about domain names can attend. Talk, learn, listen, network, and drink beer.

“Did you know that the average growth of domain prices has been in excess of 7.3% per year over the last 10 years? 4-letter domains rise even faster, 9.3% growth per annum over the last 10 years” – Jackson Ellsgood, Escrow.com.

Starting at 6:00 PM we’re getting together in

Name.com Introduces Referral Program and Curated Search

I want to share an update from Name.com that will likely be of interest to their customers.

The company is bringing back its referral program that provides financial incentives for customers to get people they know to use Name.com products and services. I don’t have many names registered with Name.com, but the company offers a wide array of products that are easy to use. They have also been helpful to me on at least two occasions when I bought names registered there. It’s always nice to be able to refer friends to use a company that you like to use (as opposed to simply doing it for financial reasons).

Name.com also introduced a new “curated search” functionality that “simplifies the process of creating a personal website.” I have not tried it out, so I can’t really comment on it, but you can read more in the update below. They also wrote a blog post about the new functionality.

Here are the updates that Name.com’s  Allison Chowdhury shared with me:

Happy 15th Birthday, Directnic!

It’s Mardi Gras today, and New Orleans-based domain registrar Directnic is also celebrating its 15th birthday. To celebrate the occasion, my friends at Directnic sent us a King Cake, Mardi Gras beads, crowns, and festive masks (which my daughter refuses to take off).

Happy birthday, Directnic! Wishing you many more happy occasions to celebrate. Thank you for celebrating with us. We wish we were in New Orleans celebrating with you in the French Quarter though!

Allegravita Brings on Kurt Pritz As Partner

Although I don’t know Kurt Pritz personally, I know that he has been active in the domain name space (primarily with ICANN) for many years. For nearly two years, Kurt served as Executive Director of the Domain Name Association, an organization that is quite involved in the new gTLD space.

Allegravita is a consulting firm with domain industry companies among its clients. I believe the company’s primary focus is helping domain industry companies advance their business interests in the Chinese market. They seem to be  successful at what they do, as the renewed commitment of their relationship with .Club illustrates.

A couple of days ago, Allegravita announced that Kurt Pritz was joining the company as a Partner, and several outlets wrote about the news, including Domain Name Wire. This seems like a

Uniregistry Hires Sam Tseng and Alan Crowe

I received some news from Uniregistry about two new company hires. Sam Tseng has been hired “after 12 years with traffic monetization platform DomainSponsor/Oversee.net.” In addition, the company also hired Alan Crowe, “previously a broker for DomainNameSales, a subsidiary of Uniregistry. Crowe has 8 years of experience in the domain name industry, getting his start at GoDaddy in 2008.” Sam and Alan will be account managers at the registrar.

I think it’s good to see people with experience taking on these roles. When I deal with an account manager, I want them to be able to identify an issue that I have and know what they need to do to resolve the issue. I would imagine having experience at other domain industry companies can be helpful in that regard, and it can also make it easier for them to see where their clients are coming from.

Congratulations to

Escrow.com: Redesigned Website Launched

A couple of weeks ago, I wrote about  Escrow.com’s beta website that was being tested. It looks like Escrow.com has now completely launched its redesigned website. I spent some time poking around on the beta site, and I think it looks very good.

When you log in to your account, it appears that the back-end of the website is the older version. I have not noticed any design changes within my control panel or when setting up a transaction. It appears that the buttons are the same as they have been for a while. I would imagine the company is taking it one step at a time and wants to make sure the front end is operating well before overhauling the entire website.

One thing you will notice is that
