The New York Times published an article about a non-profit organization formerly known as The Brooklyn Community Foundation that acquired the Brooklyn.org domain name for $49,000 and rebranded itself. The new name of the organization is Brooklyn Org, matching is domain name. The NYT article can be read with a digital subscription.
Using the Whois History tool at DomainTools, it looks like the domain name was acquired in May of 2022 – likely around May 20th. The prior archived Whois record from May 12th shows the domain name was registered privately at the domain registrar formerly known as Uniregistry. Based on a few factors I can see, I am pretty certain the domain name had been owned by a domain investor prior to the acquisition.
Namebio does not yet have the sale of Brooklyn.org indexed in its domain name sales database. When the sale is archived, it will rank in the top 10 .org domain name sales for 2022, coming in at #8 behind the $50,000 sale of Filter.org. The $231,000 sale of Trauma.org was the largest .org domain name sale in 2022.
I think the $49,000 acquisition price of Brooklyn.org is very reasonable for this non-profit organization. Even if they did not rebrand itself, having Brooklyn.org would be a win for the non-profit who could use Brooklyn.org for various marketing efforts. With the full rebrand though, securing the brand matching domain name was a wise decision.
Quite creative there at that website.
