GoDaddy

GoDaddy is a privately owned, Internet-based company that provides a variety of services including domain name registration, web hosting and e-business software sales. The company, which is headquartered in Scottsdale, Arizona, was founded by Bob Parsons. Parsons previously owned a financial services software company, which he sold in the mid-1990s upon retirement. He came out of retirement in 1997 to form Jomax Technologies, the predecessor to GoDaddy.

Since it’s inception, GoDaddy has risen to become the largest domain registrar in the world, with tens of million of domains registered to its clients. The company ranks as the world’s largest ICANN-accredited registrar; it’s approximately four times larger than its nearest competition. Recent corporate acquisitions include Outright, Locu, Afternic, and Media Temple.

GoDaddy has redefined Internet hosting services, and it has been the recipient of numerous industry awards and accolades. Among these awards are the 2001 Arizona BBB award for Business Ethics and the 2011 SC Magazine award for Best Security Team. In 2011, it ranked number four in the Phoenix Business Magazine list of “Best Places to Work in the Valley” and it made the 2012 Forbes list of “Best 100 Companies to Work For.”

Known for its sometimes controversial commercials and interesting spokespersons, GoDaddy also sponsors a number of charitable causes in support of domestic violence and child abuse awareness, and sports events, including NASCAR and the Super Bowl. In 2013, the company shifted its advertising strategy to focus more on small to medium sized business owners (SMB). Reflecting this change, its commercials and advertising materials shifted from “sexy” to smart.

Possible Fake GoDaddy Coupon Email

Just a head’s up that it appears a fake GoDaddy coupon email may be making the rounds. The subject of today’s email is “Get 32% OFF your order – no minimum.” When you hover over the links in the email, you’ll notice a Goo.gl url shortener is used for the redirect instead of a GoDaddy.com url, which would most likely be used if the email was legitimate.

I hesitate to call this a phishing email because it seems that the url takes the visitor to some sort of affiliate page within the GoDaddy website, although I didn’t investigate further. My guess is that it’s someone who is trying to get affiliate credit somehow, although I think it’s pretty shady that the “from” field says “Godaddy.com” and the email address is noreply@godaddy.com. It could also potentially be

Update: GoDaddy Auctions Back Up

6

If you tried to visit the GoDaddy Auctions website today, you saw that the company experienced some major downtime. According to an email I received from a company representative, the website is now operational.

Paul Nicks, Sr. Director of the Aftermarket at GoDaddy, had this update to share:

“We took our GoDaddy auction website offline earlier today after our monitoring systems alerted us to a potential issue. Once we confirmed the health of our system, we took additional time to reset our auction end dates. Auctions.GoDaddy.com is now up and running. As a reminder, we will be extending any auctions set to end today by an extra day. We are sorry for the inconvenience and appreciate your patience.”

I am sure it was a bit of an inconvenience to customers, but I am glad that the issue seems to be resolved. If you notice anything funky, I am sure they would appreciate a “head’s up” about it through the company’s support channels or Twitter feed.

Update on GoDaddy Auctions Outage

0

Earlier this afternoon, I reported that GoDaddy Auctions is down. At the time of this update, GoDaddy Auctions is still down and there is no ETA on when the website will be fixed. I did receive an update from Paul Nicks, Sr. Director of the Aftermarket at GoDaddy, and here’s what he had to say about today’s outage and auctions:

“We noticed an issue with our Auctions.GoDaddy.com Web page today. We suspended the auction process temporarily, and are working to restore service as soon as possible. Once we’re back up, we will be extending any auctions set to end today by an extra day. We will update you when service is restored.”

I will share further updates in this article when I receive them.

GoDaddy Auctions is Down

I was doing some Whois research via DomainTools this morning, and after clicking a “for sale” link, the GoDaddy Auctions website wouldn’t load for me. Upon trying to access it via the main page, I got an error that said “SSL connection error.” I tried to visit again using the non-secure Auctions.GoDaddy.com website and saw the following error message from GoDaddy CEO Blake Irving to let visitors know GoDaddy Auctions is currently down:

“We are experiencing problems. We understand this is impacting some customers and we take this situation very seriously.

Everyone at GoDaddy.com is working to restore all sites affected by this outage as soon as possible.

Please see updates on Twitter.com by following @GoDaddy or on Facebook.

Thank you for your patience.

–Blake Irving, CEO”

Although it’s good that the error message is up on the non-secure website, I think it would be wise to post an error message on the secure website as well, since many people access GoDaddy Auctions via that channel. Hopefully this downtime will be brief.

Hopefully this downtime will be brief. I reached out to Paul Nicks,

BuyDomains Auction at GoDaddy Ends Today

The BuyDomains auction at GoDaddy will be ending this afternoon, and there are about 150 domain names included in the auction. After looking through the list of domain names, it seems like there are a bunch of names I previously made offers on, so I will most likely be a participant in the auction.

I thought I would share 5 of my favorite domain names. (I may bid on one or more of these domain names as well as others from the auction):

  • Afficionado.com
  • Galas.com
  • HikingGuide.com
  • Invigorating.com
  • Perfectionist.com

I believe just about all of the auctions have reserve prices, although the reserve range is not shared publicly. Judging by the pricing on some of the domain names prior to the auction, I would bet they are going to move some inventory with this sale.

The auctions end later on this afternoon.

GoDaddy Hosting BuyDomains Auction

According to a large banner on the GoDaddy Auctions homepage, GoDaddy will be hosting a private auction featuring domain names owned by BuyDomains. There are 150 domain names up for auction, and the starting price for each auction is $500. It appears that many of these auctions have reserve prices, but it is unclear what the reserve ranges are for individual domain names. A wide variety of domain names are included in the auction.

This marks GoDaddy’s first venture into private “theme” auctions in over a little over a year. As you may recall, GoDaddy ran private auctions on behalf of the .Info and .Org registries in  late 2012, early 2013.

In the past, BuyDomains partnered with SnapNames to run auctions with domain names from the company’s portfolio. I am not sure if the GoDaddy acquisition
