When I started my career 20+ years ago, I was a Project Manager at a direct marketing agency and then I became a Marketing Manager at an insurance company. When people asked what I did for work, those two jobs were pretty easy to explain to people.
People have a more difficult time understanding what I do as a domain investor. Oftentimes, when I tell someone out of the domain/tech bubble what I do for work, they don’t really understand. Sometimes, people don’t even know what a domain name is.
Here are some of the most common replies I get from people when I tell them that I am a domain investor:
- Is that like GoDaddy?
- Do people still do that?
- Can you make a good living from that?
- Do you work for someone?
- Is that cybersquatting/squatting?
When trying to explain what I do to people who don’t understand it, I will first explain what a domain name is at the highest level. I’ll then explain that I buy good domain names and put them up for sale. I’ll usually share some examples of domain names I own and explain why companies buy domain names from me.
The easiest way to educate people outside of the tech space is telling people it’s like finding the owners of undeveloped land, buying it for a fair price, putting up a for sale sign on the property, and waiting until someone calls me because they want to build something on that land. There are many similarities to real estate investing, and people seem to understand the business of domain names more when I compare it to buying undeveloped real estate.

The easiest way to explain is to show them how much money I make… 🤣 😂 🤣
