GoDaddy

GoDaddy is a privately owned, Internet-based company that provides a variety of services including domain name registration, web hosting and e-business software sales. The company, which is headquartered in Scottsdale, Arizona, was founded by Bob Parsons. Parsons previously owned a financial services software company, which he sold in the mid-1990s upon retirement. He came out of retirement in 1997 to form Jomax Technologies, the predecessor to GoDaddy.

Since it’s inception, GoDaddy has risen to become the largest domain registrar in the world, with tens of million of domains registered to its clients. The company ranks as the world’s largest ICANN-accredited registrar; it’s approximately four times larger than its nearest competition. Recent corporate acquisitions include Outright, Locu, Afternic, and Media Temple.

GoDaddy has redefined Internet hosting services, and it has been the recipient of numerous industry awards and accolades. Among these awards are the 2001 Arizona BBB award for Business Ethics and the 2011 SC Magazine award for Best Security Team. In 2011, it ranked number four in the Phoenix Business Magazine list of “Best Places to Work in the Valley” and it made the 2012 Forbes list of “Best 100 Companies to Work For.”

Known for its sometimes controversial commercials and interesting spokespersons, GoDaddy also sponsors a number of charitable causes in support of domestic violence and child abuse awareness, and sports events, including NASCAR and the Super Bowl. In 2013, the company shifted its advertising strategy to focus more on small to medium sized business owners (SMB). Reflecting this change, its commercials and advertising materials shifted from “sexy” to smart.

Joe Styler Comments on GoDaddy 2 Factor Authentication Updates

GoDaddy LogoI think having 2 factor authentication (2FA) enabled on domain registrar accounts is of utmost importance at those registrars that offer it. Some registrars use Google Authenticator, others utilize a separate security fob of some sort, and others use text message alerts.

GoDaddy just updated its 2 factor authentication system, and I think it is important for domain investors who use GoDaddy to know about what changed and how it changed. In a thread on NamePros, Joe Styler, the Aftermarket Product Manager at GoDaddy, mentioned that GoDaddy made some updates to its 2FA security. I reached out to Joe, and he shared some additional information and insight about the updates, what prompted them, and how these changes will impact customers.

Here’s what Joe told me:

ImpeachTrump.com in Auction at GoDaddy

ImpeachTrump.com Domain Name

It seems that whenever there is a Presidential election in the US, there are people who call for the President’s impeachment. We are at a divisive time in US history, and despite the fact that President Donald Trump has been in office less than a month, there are people who would like to see the President impeached. For those who are on that side, the perfect domain name is in auction right now.

The ImpeachTrump.com domain name is currently in auction at GoDaddy Auctions. There have been two bids placed in the auction, and the current high bid is already at $1,524. The starting bid was $1,499. There is approximately one day remaining in the auction. There does not appear to be a reserve price that I can see, so it looks like the high bidder will win the auction.

This is not a typical expiring domain name auction at GoDaddy as ImpeachTrump.com

5 Super Bowl Sunday Thoughts and Updates

Super Bowl Sunday is one of my favorite days of the year.  Either my team (New England Patriots), is  playing in the Super Bowl, or I am excited to hang out with friends and watch the commercials. Whatever the case is, the Super Bowl is usually played right in the middle of the Winter. This means that the days are starting to get longer and I can begin looking forward to the  Spring. I love the Winter in Boston, but I am very happy when it is over.

This evening, Tom Brady will be  playing to win his fifth Super Bowl. I thought I would share 5 thoughts and updates prior to the big game tonight. You are welcome to share some of your thoughts as well.

Blake Irving Discusses H-1B Visas on CNBC

12

Earlier this week, GoDaddy CEO Blake Irving penned a highly cited article on LinkedIn discussing H-1B visas. The strong lead-in to the article shows how dire Blake believes the situation is right now:  “The entire US economy is at stake with Trump’s draft work-visa order.”

I don’t recall seeing GoDaddy take such a leading position on a politicized topic such as this. I don’t know enough about the issue to have an educated opinion right now, but I admire  Blake for being brave enough to take such a public stance on the topic.

This morning, Blake made an appearance on CNBC’s Squawk on the Street to discuss his position regarding H-1B visas. The video is embedded below.

During a special Super Bowl commercial television show that aired on CBS last night, GoDaddy’s 2017 Super Bowl commercial was debuted. GoDaddy’s commercial doesn’t discuss domain names, but it does feature GoDaddy’s new GoCentral website builder tool.

Here is a description of the Super Bowl commercial, as shared by GoDaddy:

The new GoDaddy Super Bowl ad is called “Good Morning” and introduces a new character who personifies the Internet …… with the idea that no one knows the Internet like GoDaddy.

The :30 spot is packed with humorous Internet references designed to appeal to women and men of all ages. At the heart of the long-term campaign launch is a promotion for GoDaddy’s innovative new website building service: GoCentral.

Blake Irving: “We fully support the investors”

Product Hunt LogoEarlier today, GoDaddy CEO Blake Irving participated in a Product Hunt LIVE AMA session. During the course of this chat, participants had the opportunity  to ask Blake just about any question related to GoDaddy, the tech space, and beyond.

There were several questions that Blake answered regarding domain names and even domain name investors. In one response to a question about whether “domain resellers / sharks” are a problem, Blake came out in defense of people who invest in domain names. Here’s what he said:
