Domaining.com Newsletter on Mondays to Feature Domains for Sale

According to Francois Carrillo, Monday is the most active day for business in the domain industry. People are excited to get back to work, and many start their day by reading the Domaining.com newsletter to see if anything important happened over the weekend and what’s going on during the week.

Because much of the news during the weekend is less important (personally, I just had a Saturday post with weekly updates) than during the work week, Francois has decided to work with domain brokers to use Monday’s Domaining.com newsletter as a domain sales platform.

Domain brokers and domain owners will be able to work with Francois to list their domain names for sale. With an audience of thousands of readers, it seems like a decent way to close some sales, assuming domain investors continue to read the Monday newsletter.

I’ve had some success paying for advertising on Domaining.com, selling several domain names this year that were likely seen with the higher visibility placement at the top of Domaining.com, combined with the top newsletter placement.

Apparently, the Monday domain sales newsletter is already paying dividends. I’ve been told that a sale was already made within two minutes of the newsletter’s delivery this morning featuring Media Option’s brokered domain names.

Quidsi Buys Look.com for $400k

According to an 8k form filed by publicly traded Banks.com, the company sold Look.com for $400,000 on October 24, and Quidsi was the purchaser. A press release put out by Banks.com mentioned that it was a cash deal:

“With the sale of Look.com, we’re able to convert what has been a non-productive asset since we exited the search business into cash that will help build our core business going forward,” said Dan O’Donnell, Chief Executive Officer of Banks.com.

You may recall that Quidsi is the company that owns Diapers.com, Soap.com, YoYo.com, Wag.com, and possibly other websites.

It was just a few weeks ago (October 6) that the company put out a press release announcing that  Look.com was for sale. This came shortly after Look.com didn’t sell at auction, where the reported reserve price was somewhere between $500,000 – $1m.

A whois lookup shows that Quidsi has already taken possession of the domain name, although the domain name does not yet resolve. It is not yet known what will be built on the Look.com domain name.

A quick sale like this proves that great domain names can be sold quickly for a whole lot of money. Congrats to both the buyer and the seller.

Update: Estibot’s Lead Generation Tool

Earlier today, I posted an article about using Estibot’s Lead Generation Tool to sell a domain name, and that article has been taken down. I am sorry if you are looking for that article and it’s no longer available to read.

After a couple of well-reasoned comments from readers, and after thinking about it a bit further, I decided to pull the article. Although I was trying to show how useful the Estibot tool was to me, I think much of the success had to do with my sales email, negotiating experience, and most importantly,  the domain name.

Don’t get me wrong, the Estibot sales lead generation tool was helpful in finding a buyer, but I think my post made it sound almost too easy. I don’t think it’s right to give people the impression that it’s easy because the account at Estibot isn’t cheap, and I don’t think people will have much luck if their domain names aren’t great and prices aren’t fair. For instance, it’s not likely going to benefit people who want to sell a brandable domain name.

The Estibot tool worked well for me, but after further thought, I don’t want to give the idea that it’s a simple process. I hope you aren’t disappointed, but I would rather take the post down than have people use my example and get in trouble for spamming or have people become disappointed that they couldn’t replicate my success.

Dueling Listings: Battle of the Domain Brokers

Both Dave Evanson and Ryan Colby are two people I talk to and email frequently, and both of them are Facebook friends of mine. During the past several days, watching their individual Facebook feeds has been amusing.

One minute Dave Evanson is announcing that he is the exclusive broker for  FinancialAdvisor.com, and shortly after, Ryan Colby is announcing that Domain Holdings is the exclusive broker for  RetirementPlan.com. Dave follows up with Conventions.com and not to be outdone, Ryan posts Slogan.com as the newest exclusive listing.

This back and forth has been going on for the last few days and it’s quite amusing to witness, especially with the stellar domain names each has been able to put under contract.

Dave Evanson is a senior domain broker for Sedo and Ryan Colby is a domain broker/VP Product Manager for Domain Holdings. Both guys have closed some pretty large deals in 2011, and if there’s one thing I about them I know, both work very hard on behalf of their clients.

If I was forced to choose who I believe is the best domain broker out of the two of them, without a doubt I would say that

Led by the sale of Averages.com for $20,000, Afternic sold just over $620,000 in domain names last week (publicly reported sales only). There were 421 total sales (public and private). The top four sales from last week were all DLS sales, meaning they were not owned by NameMedia companies.

Sedo Reports Around $650k in Domain Sales – $1.73 Million in Total

SedoI just received the weekly sales report, and Sedo closed roughly $650,000 when you take the exchange rate into consideration. Leading the way at $50,000 Euros was Callisto.com, which was owned by Garry Chernoff and parked at InternetTraffic.com prior to the sale. The domain name appears to still be in escrow, so the buyer is unknown at this point. There is a company called Callisto Pharmaceuticals, so it’s conceivable that they upgraded.

Although the report doesn’t include all of the company’s sales, I am told that this past week there were a total of 871 domain name sales through Sedo’s marketplace, totaling $1.73 million.
