Boston Domain Investor Meetup

I am thinking about organizing a meet up of domain investors who are located in the Boston area, and I am interested in knowing if there will be enough interested people. I’ve spoken with a couple of companies in the area, and I am quite sure there will be a decent turnout.

When I lived in New York, I organized a few domain investor meetups. The get togethers consisted of anywhere from 15-50 people, and I am still in touch with a number of people I met at the meetups. Most were held at bars and restaurants, and I think the best type of environment is one where people can move around and discuss business rather than sitting at a table or multiple tables.

For the Boston area meet up, I am thinking about

FreshDrop Announces New Backordering Service

FreshDropFreshDrop is one of my favorite tools when it comes to researching domain names. I spend a fair amount of time using FreshDrop daily to scout names that are coming up for auction on NameJet.

I want to share some news that I received from FreshDrop Founder Tan Tran. The company is now offering a backordering service on  Pheenix.com. According to Tran, “Pheenix customers are allowed to backorder .com and .net domain names for a  low price of $18.95 per caught domain.  Domain backorders currently is on a  ‘First come, First Served’ basis with only one customer being able to  reserve a backorder per domain.”

FreshDrop customers can find domain names of interest and place a free backorder that is only charged when the domain name is successfully caught. Keep in mind, the domain name needs to be in “pending delete” status in order to place a backorder on it. Although the company uses a variety of registrars to for its drop catching, all domain names that are caught can be managed from the Pheenix.com platform.

Several companies currently offer this service, and another favorite platform of mine, Protrada, offers something similar. Because drop services are basically competing against each other to catch the name before another company catches it, if you really want to buy a domain name via drop catching, it’s wise to backorder it at different places to improve your chances.

Give  Pheenix  a try when you have a chance, and let us know what you think. I’ll do the same.

Bill Sweetman to Leave Tucows and Start Domain Consulting Firm

Bill SweetmanBill Sweetman is probably one of the most recognizable people at a domain conference, and he is someone whose opinion is always valued when it comes to the domain industry. Since 2007, Bill has worked at Tucows, and his current role is Vice President, Domain Portfolio at Tucows and General Manager of YummyNames.

This afternoon on his blog, Sweetmantra, Bill announced his resignation from Tucows to start his own domain name consulting firm. Bill cited the upcoming launch of new gTLDs as a reason for his starting own firm, as well as the fact that hundreds of millions of more people will be going online in the coming years. Bill’s final day at Tucows will be April 26.

Bill is going to parlay his experiences into a “boutique domain name consulting firm,” and he intends to launch it later on this quarter.

There are a number of top tier domain consultants and consulting companies, and I think it’s great that Bill is making the move to launch his own firm. I wish Bill all the best, and look forward to hearing about it once the details are announced.

Congratulations to Bill and wishing him all the best.

Bill Hartzer to be Keynote Speaker at DBRFF

It was just announced that search engine optimization expert Bill Hartzer will be the keynote speaker at this year’s Domain Boardroom Fun Fest, a fee free conference for members of the private Domain Boardroom domain forum. Bill will be discussing current SEO issues and topics, going over basic SEO strategy, and doing a Q and A.

Bill has given me quite a bit of SEO help on my websites over the last few years. He has always provided me with actionable information to let me know what I can do to increase visitor stickiness while making my websites more visible in Google. I have found Bill’s services to be affordable.

I believe the most beneficial aspect of Bill’s talk at DBRFF is that he will do some website reviews for DBR members. In addition to speaking about SEO, he will give examples and tips using member websites. Some might cringe at the idea of having their website disected, but it will be helpful to those who volunteer to have their site reviewed and discussed.

Donna Mahony is expecting between 50 – 100 people in attendance for the conference. I believe sponsorships opportunities are still available.

DomainAgents Raising Funds For Growth

Domain AgentsEvery once in a while, I look at the investment opportunities that are available on Angel List. There are frequently companies I’ve never heard of trying to raise investment funding from venture capitalists and other investors. Yesterday, I saw a brand on the website I recognized: DomainAgents.

I wrote about DomainAgents before in an interview with Phil McKegney, Co-Founder of the company. DomainAgents is a negotiation platform that was built to help domain buyers and domain owners come to terms on their domain name transactions. The company is seeking to raise a publicly undisclosed amount in order to fund future expansion.

To date, the company has received a considerable amount of funding from a number of prominent domain industry veterans. DomainAgents is now in the process of raising a new round of fundraising and has created a profile on Angel List.

I asked McKegney for additional information about the funding round, but management isn’t able to publicly disclose many more details due to legal regulations that prohibit it. However, McKegney told me, “Everyone involved with the company has a defined entrepreneurial streak and wants to see DomainAgents reach it’s maximum potential. Part of maximizing the potential is increasing the service and product mix, along with our reach.”

I understand Domain Agents is using Angel List along with other means of fundraising. The “company is committed to developing DomainAgents into a leadership role within the domain name industry,” wrote McKegney. “We’re ramping up fast and closing deals as fast as they come in. Our current domain registar partners are very satisfied with our sales conversions and excited about the increases in revenue stream.  We also have a new domainer-focused service that we’ll be rolling out in a few weeks that should add some extra revenue for domainers and help convert more sales,” he added.

If you are interested in learning more about this opportunity, you can visit the Angel.CO website or contact Mckegney directly for additional details. I am not an investor in, nor do I have any financial stake in the company.
