Boston Domain Investor Meetup

I am thinking about organizing a meet up of domain investors who are located in the Boston area, and I am interested in knowing if there will be enough interested people. I’ve spoken with a couple of companies in the area, and I am quite sure there will be a decent turnout.

When I lived in New York, I organized a few domain investor meetups. The get togethers consisted of anywhere from 15-50 people, and I am still in touch with a number of people I met at the meetups. Most were held at bars and restaurants, and I think the best type of environment is one where people can move around and discuss business rather than sitting at a table or multiple tables.

For the Boston area meet up, I am thinking about two options and would like your feedback about them and about whether you’d be interested in attending assuming the date works.

Option 1: Meetup at Fenway Park. There are a couple of standing room sections that are available for groups, so we wouldn’t have to be in assigned seats. I would likely choose a mid-week 7pm game in June or July. The tickets are somewhere around $35/each not including food or drink

Option 2: Meetup at a restaurant or bar in Boston. This would be a less expensive option without the “distraction” of a Red Sox game. People wouldn’t have to give me a firm commitment/payment in advance if this option is chosen.

I am not sure if I will seek out a sponsor for the event to defray costs. It’s not really fair for a sponsor to pay and not get much for their marketing dollars, and I would prefer to keep it casual rather than having to set up A/V equipment or have handouts.

Please let me know your thoughts in the comment section about whether you’d be able to attend assuming things work out, and let me know what you think of the two options.

  1. Pencil me in.

A quick trip up from Cape Cod.

With Afternic in Waltham and Sedo in Cambridge, I’m sure you’d get plenty of people to show up.

    Either idea would be interesting.

Would Fenway option be open to spouses and kids?

    • Yeah – once I get an idea of how many people will be attending, I’ll talk to my guy and reserve the tickets/section. I will need to see how many people can be in a section, but I am sure it can accomodate family and/or friends.

  2. I would attend.

There is also an ICANN employee living in South Boston who has held a meet-up in the past.

  3. Either option would be great…!

However as a Sox fan, I would lean towards the ballgame – as long as the venue allows for abit of professional mingling.

Thanks Elliot for heading up the effort..!

  4. I spoke with someone I know in the Red Sox ticket office. To get a special section like that, we need 20 people at the minimum which will be no problem. I am going to a game in a week and I will confirm the section to make sure it’s conducive to discussion, and then I will check availability for late June.

  5. I would try and make it. I’m in New York so it’s a long haul and I’m not sure if I will attend. But I’m certainly interested. I’d be fine with it being at Fenway or at a restaurant. As Elliot knows, I’m a huge Sox fan.
