MattressGiant.com Going Up for Auction

It’s not often that the domain name of a former major retailer comes up for auction. It looks like MattressGiant.com, once the website of Mattress Giant, is coming up for auction on NameJet. The domain name is registered at Network Solutions, and it looks like it recently expired, as it is in Pending Renewal or Deletion status.

Mattress Giant was once a thriving retailer of mattresses. The Wikipedia entry for Mattress Giant states that “Mattress Giant had a total of 360 stores in 14 states nationwide.” According to the Wikipedia article, “[I]n 2012 it was announced Mattress Firm would acquire all Mattress Giant locations in the U.S in a $47 million deal.” I am not sure what happened to the domain name for it to expire, but I presume it still receives some traffic.

The backorder deadline for this domain name is

Submit Domain Names for DomainFest Macau Auction

The DomainFest conference in Macau is coming up in just under a month from now, and I received an email seeking out domain name submissions for an auction that will take place during the event. The auction is being conducted by Right of the Dot, and it will take place on the 4.cn domain name marketplace. The auction will be held online from September 2nd – 10th.

As you can probably imagine, it looks like the auction organizers are only seeking out high quality domain names that would appeal to the market. The types of domain names they suggested are high value liquid domain names, particularly short names, numeric domain names, and possibly some short one word domain names.

For your convenience, I have published the email I received below. Before you submit your list of domain names, you should probably carefully review the types of domain names they are seeking.

NameJet Changes Bid Increments

Although I don’t recall actively participating  on a six figure auction on NameJet, I have been an observer on quite a few of them. One thing I found peculiar is that an auction could be in the half a million range and bidding would increase by just $100 per bid. This was a bit frustrating considering the auction is extended by 5 minutes for every bid placed in the final moments of an auction.

I just learned that NameJet has changed its bidding increments for auctions over $25,000. The new bid increments for auctions above $25,000 are below:

Current NameJet Bid Increments:

  • Less than $1,000 – $10
  • Over $1,000, but less than $25,000 – $100
  • Over $25,000, but less than $50,000 – $200
  • Over $50,000, but less than $100,000 – $500
  • Over $100,000 – $1,000

I asked NameJet General Manager Jonathan Tenenbaum to share the rationale

XR.com Auction Surpasses $500k

The bidding in the NameJet auction for XR.com just surpassed $500,000, although the reserve price has not yet been met. The high bid currently stands at $501,000. Because the XR.com auction is a public auction, all of the auction participant  information is publicly available for anyone to see (even for people who don’t have NameJet accounts).

At the time of publication, there are 701 bid from 259 bidders. There are 8 bidders whose bids were for at least $380,000. The auction will conclude on Wednesday afternoon. As a public auction, bidders who did not backorder the domain name are still eligible to bid. Because of the current high bid, bidders who wish to participate must be verified by NameJet in advance. I am not sure how long that process takes, so prospective bidders should ensure this verification takes place prior to bidding.

In early July, SX.com sold on NameJet for just over $550,000. There haven’t been many

Sedo’s Great Domains July Auction Results

Sedo’s Great Domains auction for the month of July ended yesterday afternoon, and I published the list of sales below. The largest sale was for rechtsanwälte.de, which sold for 14999 EUR, which is about $16,436.43 USD at today’s exchange rate. I did a Google search, and it looks like the German word “rechtsanwälte” means attorney or lawyer in English, which helps to explain the value of the domain name.

Interestingly, of the 13 domain names that sold in the auction, 6 of them are .DE ccTLD domain names. Also interestingly, only 5 of the 13 domain names that sold were .com domain names. I don’t recall seeing an auction like this with fewer than half of the sales being .com.

Keep in mind that

Will XR.com Sell for More Than SX.com?

A couple of weeks ago, SX.com sold on NameJet for $555,050. This afternoon, NameJet put out a press release to announce that another two letter .com domain name is hitting the auction block in less than two weeks.

XR.com is up for auction with a reserve price that is not yet known. The auction for XR.com will be a 3 day public auction that is set to begin on Sunday, August 2, and it will conclude on Wednesday, August 5 in the afternoon. At the time of publication, there are 76 bidders who have placed backorders for XR.com, and the high bid is $21,000. The reserve has not been met yet.

I am curious if you think the sale price of XR.com will surpass the $555,050 sale price of SX.com. Please vote in the poll below to cast your vote. You are also welcome to share your thoughts about this if you would like.
