Porkbun Hits 2 Million DUM

In a press release distributed this morning, Porkbun announced it hit the 2 million domain names under management milestone. The registrar was established in 2015, and it hit the 1 million mark seven years later in 2022. It is an impressive feat to have doubled that number in about two years.

Notably, Porkbun was founded as a retail registrar focused on selling non-.com domain names in extensions owned by its parent company, Top Level Design. The press release shared some of this background for those unfamiliar with Porkbun’s history:

My One Outbound Follow-Up Email

I don’t do a great deal of outbound marketing on my domain names. When I do outbound, I typically find no more than the top 5-15 prospective buyers, and I generally stick to marketing domain names priced below $10,000.

Ideally, because I try to stick to highly targeted prospective buyers, at least one or two people will reply to my email and either buy the domain name or try to negotiate a better deal. More often than not, I won’t receive a reply at all. I hardly ever reply to unsolicited marketing messages myself, so it’s not a surprise to have low response rates to outbound sales emails.

Date Set for 2025 ICA Annual Member Meeting

2

The ICA member meeting in January was the first domain industry event I attended in several years. I was happy to fly to Las Vegas for the first time in quite a while, and it was an event that was well-worth attending.

The ICA just announced the dates for its 2025 annual Member Meeting, and I plan to be there. This 4th annual event will be held January 26th – 28th, 2025, at Resorts World in Las Vegas, Nevada. The meeting is open to all ICA members and anyone who joins the ICA before the meeting date. You can see membership levels and fees on the ICA website.

In the email sent by the ICA, here are some of the expected highlights for this upcoming event:

Elliots.com – You Have an Inquiry

Ten days ago, Elliots.com sold for $2,759 via GoDaddy Auctions. I was a bidder on the auction, but I maxed out just below $1k. I appreciate that many people reached out to make sure I was aware of the auction.

This morning, I received an email from someone who wants to buy the domain name:

Giving LTO Option to DBS Broker

I received a GoDaddy Domain Broker Service (DBS) inquiry for one of my favorite domain names. The offer was $25k, which isn’t enough to start a conversation. The broker understood this, likely because he can see at least one higher offer for this name and several other offers in the database. I joked with him that GoDaddy has made more money on DBS lead fees than I’ve made from this name – yet.

In speaking with the broker, he indicated that the buyer – whose identity and other background information was not shared with me – would be a good fit for the domain name. When I shared what it would take to get a deal done, he did not sound too optimistic about the buyer having the budget. Whether this is true or a negotiation tactic to get a better deal for his client is neither here nor there.

Longest and Shortest Billboard Domain Names

I spent Father’s Day weekend at our son’s soccer tournament in the middle of New Jersey. It was a 6 hour drive, but it made more sense to do that than to fly and rent a car. New Jersey never disappoints when it comes to billboard content, and this trip was no different.

On the way to New Jersey, I took a photo of this billboard advertising a 5 word .com domain name – IGotHurtInJersey.com. This is a memorable domain name that is used as a forwarder to the Fredson Statmore Bitterman law firm’s website. Smartly, the firm also bought and uses the longer IGotHurtInNewJersey.com as well. I don’t think I have ever seen a longer domain name on a billboard before.
