Sahar Sarid Shares Thoughts on Google’s ABC.xyz

Sahar Sarid is one of the most successful domain investors I know. A member of the Domain Hall of Fame, Sahar is successful to the point that he spends much of his time traveling the world and enjoying life. He has sold millions of dollars worth of domain names, and he maintains a valuable (private) portfolio of domain name assets.

I saw that Sahar published some thoughts about Google’s decision to use ABC.xyz for its new Alphabet holding company branding, and he gave me permission to share his commentary here:

I had the whole night to think of Google’s move last night and here are my conclusions:

Paul Graham Shares Excellent Domain Name Advice

Paul Graham is one of the most respected people in the startup community, and he frequently shares advice on his personal website, PaulGraham.com. In an article he just published, Change Your Name, Paul discusses the importance of domain names. More precisely, he wrote about the importance of startups owning .com domain names.

The opening sentence of the article says it all: “If you have a US startup called X and you don’t have x.com, you should probably change your name.” The basic reason for this can be found in the next paragraph: “The problem with not having the .com of your name is that it signals weakness.”

There is quite a bit of good advice shared in the article, and I will

I Appreciate Flippa Verification

I have never listed a domain name for sale on Flippa. I have thought about using Flippa and even created an account at one point, but I have yet to list a name on Flippa. Because of this, I was surprised to receive the following email from Flippa this week:

Glitter Launches on Glitter.club

Whenever I hear about a company or business using a descriptive brand name, I immediately wonder if they got the exact match .com domain name or opted for an alternative. I saw the tweet above referencing  a  TechCrunch article about a new app called Glitter, and when I checked the url, I learned that the startup is using  Glitter.club  for its website.

According to the article, “Glitter is a personal trading cards app, which lets users create mobile, tradable cards that feature all types of ‘ingredients,’ as the company calls it.” Sounds like an interesting concept.

I did some research on the Glitter.club domain name, and I saw that it  was registered to .CLUB Domains, LLC (the.Club Registry) in March of this year. In April, the domain name changed hands and was  registered to Betaworks. I reached out to Jeff Sass,  CMO of the .Club registry, and he informed

Howard Schultz Has His Domain Name(s)

Domain names  frequently take center stage at various times during an election season. A politician running for President can be burned if he or she doesn’t own the right domain names, especially if someone else owns them and uses them in a manner that goes against the campaign (for examples, see TedCruz.com, CarlyFiorina.org, JebBushForPresident.com, and many other domains that have been in the news).

According to a New York Times Op-Ed article by Maureen Dowd discussing Democratic Presidential primary candidates, “Potent friends of America’s lord of latte, Howard Schultz, have been pressing him to join the Democratic primary, thinking the time is right for someone who’s not a political lifer.” Although the article didn’t quote Mr. Schultz or discuss whether he has an interest in running for the US Presidency, he has access to the most important domain name for a campaign if he were to decide to run for President (or other public office for that matter): HowardSchultz.com.

My Video Poker Story

Around 15 years ago (when I was somewhere between 18-21) I went on a Caribbean cruise with my family. I’ve since been on several cruises, and  one of my favorite aspects of a cruise is  gambling in the Royal Caribbean casino.

Before I got into playing blackjack, I played double down video poker in the casino. As I recall, you could play between one and four quarters per hand. In the version I played, if you won a hand, you could choose to double down. The computer would show a card and you would select one of 4 face down cards to try and beat it. If you won, you doubled your winning and could choose to double down again or collect your winnings.

One evening during dinner, I wanted to try my luck in the casino. My family was still eating dinner, but I had an itch to gamble. I told them I was running to the restroom, but instead, I went to the casino. After a few minutes at the machine, I
