Tandem is a venture backed office marketplace that was in the Spring 2024 batch of YCombinator startups. The company is currently using Tandem.Space for its website, and it also owns TandemSpace.com. That domain name forwards to its website.
In a LinkedIn post over the weekend, Sean Miller, Co-Founder and CTO of Tandem, discussed the pros and cons of both of these domain names. He mentioned that the company has used Tandem.Space for a while, but they are considering a change to TandemSpace.com.
Tandem.Space is shorter and may seem to be more “cool,” while being on-brand for a company focused on office space. However, some people think operating on the .Space extension could make them appear “sketchy.” TandemSpace.com is a bit longer and less stylish, but it carries the credibility and familiarity of a .com domain name.
Sean asked people to vote on which domain name they think the company should use for its website. As of now, the vote is pretty well split.
They should acquire Tandem.com.
If not, TandemSpace.com.
Tandem.Space would be a marketing and branding nightmare.
Long long ago, I used to work on the Tandem mainframe system.
The good old OS JCL mainframe.
I’d use Tandemspace.com with tandem.space pointing to it.
At the brand level, Tandem.Space is better, that’s why the company chose it. Getting the average user used to the new TLDs is just a matter of time.
I would leave it as it is (use .space and forward .com to it) for shorter url and coolness.
But I also encourage every one to use whichever TLD you like the most. It’s your domain and it will be with you for a long time, so it’s better to use one that you’re most fond of and proud of. As for SEO, there are workarounds.
Tandem.space is kind of cool, but it’s just good to have. Maybe it could be considered a defensive mechanism. TandemSpace.com is required to be taken seriously. Tandem.com would be the premium position.
