I was sent a link to a LinkedIn video posted by Peter Mahoney, CEO of a company called Plannuh. In the video, Peter shared some thoughts about domain names. I had not heard of Peter prior to being sent the video, but from his LinkedIn profile, I can see he has a considerable amount of marketing experience for a variety of businesses of different sizes. In fact, he was CMO of Nuance Communications, maker of the Dragon speech recognition software, which owns Dragon.com.
Funny(.com) Domain Inquiry
One of the fun (perhaps?) aspects of owning a portfolio of domain names is the offbeat inquiries that come in through the offer forms and landing pages. Sometimes the inquiries come in the form of a threat, some are nonsensical, and some are humorous. Andrew Rosener shared a funny inquiry he received yesterday:

JustBalls.com Comes Up in Elon Musk Trial
Elon Musk is currently on trial in Los Angeles where he is being sued for defamation. The Guardian published an article about the trial that briefly summarizes what the case is about:
“Those were the questions at the center of the billionaire’s second day of testimony in the defamation case brought by Vernon Unsworth, a British cave explorer, against the Tesla entrepreneur. Unsworth told the federal court in Los Angeles that Musk’s 15 July 2018 tweet calling him ‘pedo guy’ made him feel ‘humiliated, ashamed, dirty’.”
US Senator Ron Wyden Tweets About .Org Sale
The fallout continues from the announcement that a private equity company will be acquiring PIR and the .org registry it operates for a reported (but yet to be independently confirmed) sale price of $1.135 billion. There have been a number of organizations, businesses, news publications, and people that have called foul in the wake of this deal announcement.
This afternoon, ICA General Counsel Zak Muscovitch retweeted US Senator Ron Wyden (Oregon), who expressed his concerns about the .org acquisition:
Expiry Auctions: To Write or Not Write?
Each expiry or expired domain name auction house has its own rules about renewing domain names. To some extent, its rules are dictated by the upstream partners where the expiry domain names are registered. Put simply, domain names in an expiry auction at GoDaddy Auctions or NameJet may be able to be renewed by the registrant until close to the end of the auction.
The ROI # is not That Important to Me
I’ve been asked what ROI I expect to achieve with my domain investments. While I have heard (and probably said) a 10x ROI is a good goal to have, I really don’t really have a hard and fast rule that a 10x return on my domain name investments is critical. Perhaps a 10x return is a fair goal across a portfolio, but it is difficult for me to think like that when it comes to selling individual domain names.
