Namecheap Ups the Ante for 2015 Move Your Domain Day

Since 2011, Namecheap has held its annual Move Your Domain Day, which has raised nearly $250,000 for the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF). This year’s Move Your Domain Day will be held on January 27, 2015, and Namecheap has a special offer to increase the amount of money raised for the EFF.

There are three fundraising tiers based on the number of domain names transferred to Namecheap and hosting plans purchased. The company’s donation to the EFF will vary depending on the tier that is hit. The full details are below, but this has the potential to raise much more money for the EFF than in years past.

In addition to the fundraising aspect of this event, Namecheap will be hosting a Reddit AMA to answer questions people may have about the company. The AMA will begin at 11am (EST) on January 27th, and it will be hosted by Richard Kirkendall, founder and CEO, with the username NamecheapCEO.

Here are the fleshed out details that were provided to me for Move Your Domain Day 2015:

Morgan Linton’s Startup Raises $1 Million Seed Round

According to a report making the rounds today, Fashion Metric raised a $1 million seed funding round from a several angel investors and venture capital companies. Fashion Metric was founded by domain investor Morgan Linton and his wife, Daina Linton. The company was founded in Los Angeles, but the Lintons recently moved the company to Austin, which has a booming startup scene.

Domainer Kevin McKim in TurboTax Commercial

I’ve often wondered what people do when they are not working on their domain investments. I recently learned that Kevin McKim of Name Innovations, operator of dotWhatever.com and BrandableNames.com, is also an actor and is featured in the TurboTax commercial that is currently seeing major television airtime.

In the Turbo Tax commercial which I embedded below, Kevin is the wedding officiant with the important speaking lines. He is seen several times during the commercial. The ad is part of TurboTax’s tax season campaign, and it was shot the first week of November in Malibu, California. It’s a national spot and it will probably play heavily the next few months in all mediums and markets. You may have already seen it during the Golden Globes, and perhaps he will also be seen during the Super Bowl.

Congratulations to Kevin for his part in this clever advertisement!

CyberSecurity.com Acquired by Adam Strong

2014 was a big year for Adam Strong. His company sold the high profile domain names Racing.com and BTC.com, and he also privately acquired quite a few keyword domain names, such as Strong.com.

In May of 2014, John Daly of NameConnect.com was brokering CyberSecurity.com in his domain sales newsletter. The domain name was listed for sale with a $400,000 price tag, and the price was reduced in September. I was monitoring the Whois information for this domain name, and I saw that Adam’s company made the acquisition.

I caught up with Adam at NamesCon, and I asked him if he

Andrew Rosener Launches Ganjapreneur.com Domain Marketplace

I was reading a press release about a  new domain name marketplace for marijuana domain names, and I unexpectedly saw a familiar name.  Ganjapreneur.com is  “a website dedicated to cannabis business news and culture,” and the company “announced the launch of their Cannabis Domain Name Market” in a morning press release. The founder of Ganjapreneur.com is Andrew Rosener, founder of Media Options domain brokerage.

I knew that Andrew had some marijuana domain names in his portfolio, but I did not recall hearing that he owns the Ganjapreneur.com domain name or that he had big plans for it. I’ve been watching a show on MSNBC called Pot Barons, which chronicles the lives of several people who own canabis companies in Colorado, where recreational marijuana recently became legal. This show is where I become aware of the “Ganjapreneur” term, and it is used to describe entrepreneurs in the marijuana (aka “ganja”) business.

Although I am not really tuned into the marijuana / cannabis domain market, I receive quite a few emails asking me to buy marijuana domain names. Most are names I have no interest in buying, but it looks like I will be able to refer these people to Ganjapreneur.com to list their domain names. I am not sure if the marketplace accepts outside submissions, but I presume they would because of their association with Media Options.

Ganjapreneur.com goes beyond domain name sales though. The website  covers the business of marijuana and cannabis, and domain name sales is only a smart part of the website. There are interviews with marijuana business owners, articles about the marijuana business, and other aspects to the website.

The entire press release announcing the launch of Ganjapreneur.com is below:

TrafficZ Shutting Down

2014 has been a year of changes for Thought Convergence. In September of this  year,  Aftermarket.com was acquired by Igloo.com and Agreed Escrow was acquired by Escrow.com. Both companies that were acquired were owned and operated by Thought Convergence.

In an  email update to clients this morning, Thought Convergence announced that its TrafficZ parking service will be shutting down for good on December 31. According to the email that was signed by Ammar Kubba and Kevin Vo:
