Will Heritage Auctions Domain Auction Hit 7 Figures?

55

It’s been quite some time since the last live domain auction hit the million dollar market. The inaugural Heritage Auctions domain auction is tonight, and there are already two six figure auctions that have hit their reserve prices and will sell whether incremental bids are placed. There are 62 domain name lots up for auction.

Including the buyer’s premium, Animation.com currently stands at $109,250 and XZ.com has a high bid of $138,000. In order to hit 7 figures, either MutualFunds.com will have to sell or a few of the other six figure names will need to meet reserve.

Regardless of the outcome, I think

Attend the Heritage Auctions Domain Auction in NYC

12

If you’re going to be in New York City on the evening of Thursday, November 21 and you want to see the first live domain auction put on by Heritage Auctions, you are invited to attend the live auction in person. Heritage Auctions is located in midtown Manhattan at 455 Park Avenue.

As with other live auctions, you can bid on the auction floor if you are in attendance. Registration is available in person the day of the event. The auction will feature  live bidding, phone bidding and live Internet bidding, which I suspect will be the most popular form of bidding.

The auction is

Why HA Domain Auction is Important

HA.com LogoI’ve been giving the Heritage Auctions domain auction more coverage than I’ve given other recent auctions, and there is a reason for it. My feeling is that if the HA auction is successful and sells 7 figures worth of inventory, we could see another major sales channel emerge.

Heritage Auctions is one of the largest auction houses in the world. It has become large because of its extensive reach around the world. Among the company’s clients are collectors and investors from all walks of life. Many of these people probably haven’t participated in a domain auction and may not even know what a domain name is. A surprisingly good result will probably get some attention from these people.

In addition to the exposure that a successful auction will give domain names to HA clients, I imagine that

Reserve Prices Revealed for HA.com Domain Auction

I received an email a few minutes ago from Aron Meystedt of Heritage Auctions, and he shared the reserve prices for the upcoming HA.com domain name auction. The live domain name auction will take place on November 21, and pre-bidding is now open.

Listed below are the reserve prices for the domain auction. These reserve prices will be posted to the auction lots later on tonight. I’ve bolded the names I think have very reasonable reserve prices considering the quality of the domain names. I do not have any domain names in this auction, and I have not been compensated by anyone with respect to this auction.

Yahoo to Auction Portfolio of Domain Names via Sedo

According to a press release from Sedo, “more than 100 premium domain names from Yahoo portfolio to be auctioned.” The Yahoo domain name auction will take place on Sedo’s platform from November 14 – 21, 2013. Some of the high value domain names include AV.com, Sandwich.com, Sled.com, Jockeys.com, and Crackers.com.

It’s not every day that a publicly traded Internet company decides to publicly sell some of its valuable domain name assets at auction. I think this domain auction could produce some solid results considering the inventory, especially given the provenance and history of the assets. For instance, AV likely stood for Alta Vista, which Yahoo acquired in 2003 and shut down this past July. In my opinion, reserve prices are on the high side, but what doesn’t sell now opens the door for future discussions.

Some of these domain names forward to pages within Yahoo’s network and others are parked at Sedo with a purchase link at the top of the landing page. At the time of this post, only 29 domain names are listed for sale in the auction, but Sedo announced that there are more than 100 domain names included in the auction. You can view

Heritage Auctions Domain Auction Ad in New York Times

imageI am in New York City right now, and I want to share this photo that I took of the Heritage Auctions domain auction advertisement from the New York Times. The advertisement, which appeared in the November 8 (Friday) edition of the NYT, was found on page B6 of the Business section.

Yesterday’s Business section had quite a bit of news coverage of the Twitter IPO, so it was probably a very good day for the company to advertise because of the additional readership. As one would expect, the MutualFunds.com auction lot was the headline domain name in the advertisement. I understand there will also be an ad for the auction in the Wall Street Journal next week.

My apologies if there are any issues with the appearance of this post or the image. This is the first time I am writing an article from my iPhone, so it might be a bit funky, but hopefully not.
