Results from the 2020 NamesCon Live Auction

Monte Cahn from Right of the Dot emailed me the final results from the NamesCon live domain name auction held last week in Austin. From what I can tell, 74 domain names were sold for a total value of just over $1.8 million USD. There were 136 domain name listed for sale in the live auction this year.

The domain names that did not sell in the auction (listed as “pass” below) will be in the extended auction that is happening on GoDaddy Auctions right now. There are also many more domain names listed in the extended auction that were not included in the live auction.

Listed below are the results from the live auction. “Phone” below means online and “Live” means it was a floor bid. “Pass” means the domain name did not hit reserve, but the bid is the high bid before it passed. I do not know if there were any “chandelier bids” included in those pass listings – nor do I know if that is permitted or accepted in Texas auctions.

Monte Cahn (Right of the Dot) emailed me with the NamesCon live auction list, including the domain names, auction order, and reserve price ranges. This list is shared below, although you should confirm details with Right of the Dot, GoDaddy Auctions, or Proxibid to ensure accuracy before participating in the auction as it might be subject to change.

The live auction will be held in the main conference hall on Thursday, January 30th at 4pm Central Time. Bidding in the live auction can also be done via Proxibid. Registration for Proxibid is required, and I believe floor bidders will also need to register for a paddle before the auction.

How to Bid on Domain Names in NamesCon Live Auction

The NamesCon live domain name auction will be held on Thursday, January 30, 2020 at 4:30pm Central Time. The auction is being held via GoDaddy Auctions this year, but the live domain name auction will be held via Proxibid. In order to bid remotely via Proxibid, advance registration is required. NamesCon attendees bidding on the auction floor will also need to register prior to the auction start to get a bidding paddle. The auction is being operated by Right of the Dot, Monte Cahn’s company.

Once again, Monte Cahn (from Right of the Dot) is responsible for organizing and managing the NamesCon auction that is scheduled for January 30, 2020. There will be a live auction held during the NamesCon conference, and that will be followed by a silent, extended auction that runs through February 14th. The biggest change this year is that the auction will be running via GoDaddy Auctions rather than NameJet.

Userbase Gets Its .com

A week ago, there was an active discussion about whether a small startup called Userbase should acquire its brand match .com domain name which was in an expiry auction at GoDaddy Auctions. The company has been operating on Userbase.dev, and the company’s founder (Daniel Vassallo) had polled Twitter to seek out opinions on whether he should spend the money required to buy the domain name. The auction ended at $33,500, and it appeared the company was passing on the opportunity.

it turns out that the winning bidder at GoDaddy Auctions apparently defaulted and did not complete the purchase. As the underbidder in the auction, Daniel was given the opportunity to buy the domain name at his highest bid after the winning bidder’s bids were removed. It looks like he is jumping at the opportunity to purchase the domain name for just shy of $25,000:

Should Userbase (.dev) Upgrade to Userbase.com?

One of the best domain names in auction at GoDaddy Auctions is Userbase.com. Despite the $7,234 (automated) GoDaddy appraisal for Userbase.com, the auction already has a high bid of $33,500 with a little more than 4 hours remaining as of the time of publication. I think it’s a great domain name and would be a solid upgrade for quite a few companies and businesses that user the Userbase or User Base branding.

One such company operates on the Userbase.dev domain name. In a Twitter thread last night, Userbase founder Daniel Vassallo asked for opinions about whether or not he should bid on the auction, which already had a high bid of $33,500:
