Results from the 2020 NamesCon Live Auction

19

Monte Cahn from Right of the Dot emailed me the final results from the NamesCon live domain name auction held last week in Austin. From what I can tell, 74 domain names were sold for a total value of just over $1.8 million USD. There were 136 domain name listed for sale in the live auction this year.

The domain names that did not sell in the auction (listed as “pass” below) will be in the extended auction that is happening on GoDaddy Auctions right now. There are also many more domain names listed in the extended auction that were not included in the live auction.

Listed below are the results from the live auction. “Phone” below means online and “Live” means it was a floor bid. “Pass” means the domain name did not hit reserve, but the bid is the high bid before it passed. I do not know if there were any “chandelier bids” included in those pass listings – nor do I know if that is permitted or accepted in Texas auctions.

  1. Interesting that xu.com could only manage $300,000 (whether real or not). The market for LL.com seems to have dropped very considerably.

A lot of the “pass” prices are meaningless, dubious bids often under the known reserve level. I really doubt anyone was willing to pay $10,000 for i.rent or $225,000 for burb.com.

    • the high bids were real and came from either the room or online. Pass prices are relevant as it showed the current interest in the room and online at that time. We will see what some of these do in the extended auction.

      • Lot of my bids didn’t get through, as the stream and the feed was lagging behind for online bidders. Very poor experience overall. Constantly between 10-30 seconds lag. After a couple of fails I simply gave up. Others I talked to faced similar issues.

          • I have no idea why they used them. 24 hours before the actual auction there were multiple email sent that the auction would run via Proxibid. You had to signup and go through the complete verification process in less than a day, only to realize during the auction that the feed and stream was delayed so they were talking about a domain in the audio that was already closed and they moved on to the next domain. Then the whole issue with “your bid was rejected, please try again”. It was just outright BAD. Felt like 2004.

          • CC only? I had to verify cc and a phone number . I first had entered a landline, and one hour before the auction they wanted to send a verification code which a landline obviously can’t receive. absolute amateur hour.

          • so you had to verify a mobile number too? because you said “it was simply entering your CC info as a payment option”. curious.

          • 200mbit should do the trick. the audio was def. out of sync and system lagged at least 10 seconds going up to 30 seconds. In previous years there was a video stream that was completely out of sync so I hoped at least the audio would hold up realtime. Unfortunately not.

      • The bids aren’t relevant if you get a buddy to bid up a name that is still under reserve. The truth is if you don’t bid up your own name then you’re not working the system the way you should. Bidding up your own name to make it look like it’s worth more than it is could possibly create a sale. Simple process. Can’t be tracked.

        • Todd – we tracked all online bids and live bids in the room. I am not aware of any “buddy” bidding but I guess anything is possible. that would happen in any live or online auction of any system. From my 25 years of experience and having pioneered the live and online auctions for the domain industry, I am confident in our process and the integrity of the bids and sales.

    • @Snoopy – your default is to always be negative. Why? Really why?

300k for xu.com is solid given the letters.
Why would you assume the bids are not real? Nuts.
LL.coms are not down, they will always be strong .com assets.
      Pass prices are not meaningless.
You are bordering on libel when calling bids dubious… you should be extremely careful.
Please provide any evidence or proof you may have about this accusation – or refrain from making these claims in future.
