One of the most prominent military news stories kicking off the week is related to misdirected emails as a result of a common typographical error involving domain names. The country of Mali has the .ML ccTLD extension while the US Military operates on the .MIL domain extension. Here’s an excerpt from the Financial Times article covering the news today:
I consider the number of registrations for a particular SLD (phrase to the left of the dot) to be one of the more important “signs of life” for a domain name. When I am evaluating domain names to buy in the aftermarket or at auction, I pay closer attention to those that have many other extensions registered.
Importantly, the number of registrations can be misleading, so there is some nuance that goes into my process for evaluating these domain names.
This morning, I was looking at a domain name currently in auction. I see there are 10 extensions registered, including the .com. Using dotDB, I see there are only 2 other domain names registered with this term. That was peculiar to me because usually if a phrase or term is registered in many extensions, there will also be other domain names registered that have the phrase within the SLD.
One of the most helpful offerings from Dan.com is the easy to use Lease to Own (LTO) purchase option. Domain name buyers who do not want to spend the money to acquire a domain name at the time of the sale can opt to pay for it over a period of time when offered by the seller.
Dan.com was acquired by GoDaddy last year, and the LTO option is now coming to Afternic. This means domain name buyers shopping on GoDaddy will be given the ability to purchase a domain name over a period of time, if leasing is offered by the seller of the domain name.

I wrote about GoDaddy’s ChatGPT plugin, which is available to OpenAI subscribers within the confines of the ChatGT platform. At the present time, users must be ChatGPT subscribers and they must be on the ChatGPT website in order to use the GoDaddy plugin.
It is my assumption that GoDaddy and other registrars already or will integrate ChatGPT results within their own searches. In fact, today I heard from a representative from CentralNic who shared that its Internet.bs retail website has already integrated ChatGPT within its search functionality. Visitors to Internet.bs can choose to search with or without ChatGPT assistance.

You don’t always see startup founders discussing how much they spent to acquire their domain name and why they felt it was necessary to do so.
Will Nitze, Founder of IQBAR, shared that his company acquired its brand match IQBAR.com domain name for $26,250. This was an upgrade from the call to action EatIQBAR.com domain name it had used since inception. IQBar.com was created in 2007, and it appears to have been owned by a business that owns many domain names.
OpenAI’s ChatGPT service has really taken off in the last several months. With its growth, third party companies and developers have been creating plugins within the ChatGPT platform offering various types of information and services.
GoDaddy recently launched its ChatGPT plugin called GoDaddy Name Search, and anyone can use the free tool to search for domain name ideas. Unlike visiting GoDaddy’s website to search for domain names, users can type in a descriptive idea for their business, and the plugin will return domain name suggestions based on availability. Users can click through on the domain names they like to hand register them via GoDaddy’s website.
