.Club Auction Ad in Wall Street Journal

14

Dot Club smallThere is an advertisement in for the .Club winter sports domain name auction in the Wall Street Journal today, and I want to share it with you. The .Club auction began today, and it will run through February 26, 2014. The auction includes 25 winter sports-related domain names in the .Club new gTLD extension. Some of the domain names include Snowboarding.club, Skiing.club, IceHockey.club, Skate.club, and others.

The last time I heard about a domain name related advertisement in a major newspaper like the WSJ was when Heritage Auctions ran one for its inaugural live domain auction in the New York Times and Wall Street Journal in November of last year.

I am not sure whether

.NYC Registry Update: Eligibility & Availability

nyc registryThe .NYC new gTLD extension is one of my favorites, and I think it has an excellent chance of being one of the most successful new domain name extensions. NYC / New York City is a brand in and of itself, and I believe there are enough people and businesses that will want to increase their connection with the City through a domain name. The City of New York is partnering with Neustar, who will manage and operate the .NYC domain registry.

Unfortunately for me, it doesn’t look like I am going to be able to purchase a .NYC domain name now that I no longer live in Manhattan (or anywhere NYC for that matter). According to a newsletter that was sent to subscribers by the .NYC registry today, .NYC domain names will only be available to purchase by “An entity or organization with a physical street address in the City, or An individual whose primary place of residence is in the City.”

I imagine there will be

Radix Hiring Registrar Partner Manager

4

Radix RegistryI want to share a domain industry job opportunity that was sent to me. Radix Registry is looking to hire a Registrar Partner Manager for the US, Canada, and Latin America markets. The job opportunity was just posted on LinkedIn.

Here is some of what the job entails, according to the job description:

“Radix is looking to develop a deeper level of engagement with the

Can a New gTLD Registration Identify a .Com Buyer?

I was chatting with a colleague last week, and he mentioned that some of his keywordGTLD.com domain names have been receiving more offers now that the matching new gTLDs have become available to purchase. The new gTLDs will likely lead to people and companies trying to buy the matching .com domain name to prevent confusion and leakage. This will likely mean that it should be easier to determine who is inquiring about the domain name.

If the owner of a  keywordGTLD.com receives an inquiry on his domain name, the first thing he or she should do is perform a Whois search for the keyword.GTLD. Most Whois providers (maybe all) can check the Whois data for the new gTLDs. Instead of having to spend a lot of time trying to investigate who wants to acquire a particular domain name, that information can be found simply by looking at who owns the keyword.GTLD domain name.

For at least the near term,

Fairwinds Partners: Beyond the Dot Conference

2

Fairwinds Partners is organizing and producing Beyond the Dot 2014, a conference focused on how the new gTLD domain names will affect end-users. The one-day conference will be held next week, on February 19, 2014, at the Newseum in Washington, DC. If you have an interest in the new domain names, this might be an event you will benefit from attending.

The primary reasons I think it will be interesting is because of the comprehensive agenda as well as the mix of announced speakers and guests. Topics of discussion include everything from operating a new domain extension to ICANN’s role to purchasing and using the new domain names. Several representatives from domain registries that will be operating new TLDs will be in attendance.

There are a number of distinguished speakers and panelists on the agenda that will each bring an interesting perspective to the event, including:

  • Akram Atallah  President, Global Domains Division,  ICANN
  • Mr. Sami Hassanyeh,  Chief Digital Officer, AARP, Inc.
  • The Honorable Erika Mann,  Board of Directors, ICANN
  • Mr. Jim Messina,  2012 Campaign Manager for President Obama
  • The Honorable John Negroponte,  Former United States Deputy Secretary of State and Former Director of National Intelligence

If I lived closer to DC, I would probably attend the event, but I will not be there. The cost to attend Beyond the Dot is $495, and advance registration is required. I understand that discounts are offered to non profit organizations and members of the media. The event runs from 8am – 5pm. For more details or to register to attend, visit the Fairwinds Partners website.
