My Thoughts on the GoDaddy Auction App

I spend a fair amount of money on domain name auctions, but I have only bought a handful of names on GoDaddy’s auction platform. Frankly, I did not like the bidding and searching experience, and I stayed away from GoDaddy Auctions.

Case in point: at the beginning of December, there was a domain name I wanted to own that was at auction at GoDaddy. I was on a brief vacation and away from my computer. I was outbid at the final moments of the auction, and I needed to bid from my iPhone. Needless to say, I experienced some serious troubles and I let Paul Nicks and my account rep know about it. Despite trying hard to bid higher than the final price, I lost the auction, which ended at around $10,000.

A few weeks later, I was contacted by a couple of contacts at GoDaddy asking if I would like to test out their new Auctions app that was undergoing beta testing. I let them know that I was not a regular bidder but would give it a shot.

For the last few weeks, I have been testing the app.

NamesCon Live Auction Results

The NamesCon live auction was held yesterday afternoon, and I received the auction results from Scott Pruitt, NameJet’s Director of Marketing. Overall the live auction, was pretty successful, grossing $1,495,400 in sales. 92 of the 131 live auction listings were sold, which is a sell through rate of around 70%.

The top live auction sale was Lawn.com, which sold for $240,000. Tuscany.com was the second largest sale of the auction, closing at $157,500. Penis.com was the third largest sale of the day at $110,000. I think three of the best deals of the night were Erotica.com at $80,000, Consignment.com at $34,000, SouthAmerica.com at $30,000.

Scott had some thoughts on the biggest surprise of the night, which was the sale of the non-.com domain names:

“The biggest surprise was the success of the non-.com names offered in the auction. 36 non-.com names were sold for a total of $354,600, with an average sale price of $9,850! Some of those included 88.xyz @ $70,000, web.hosting @ $52,500, stock.photo @ $16,000, and 8.link @ $14,500. If this is any indication of things to come, 2016 may turn out be the year of the non-.com names.”

Although Monte’s prediction that this year’s NamesCon auction would set a record has not yet come to fruition, there are still many of the better domain names in a silent auction that is ongoing. I would imagine that they will move some of these domain names. I would not be shocked if the final tally is in the $3-4 million range.

The live auction results have been published below:

NamesCon 2016 Live Auction List

There are a ton of great domain names listed for sale in the NamesCon 2016 auction on NameJet. The live auction will take place tomorrow (Monday), Jan 11th at 2pm PST. Mike Berkens posted an article with information on how to bid on the live auction names.

Monte Cahn emailed me the list of live auction domain names, and I published it below. If any of the domain names are of interest to you, it’s important to read Mike Berkens’ article, especially if you are not attending the conference in person.

Here’s the link to the live bidding platform for tomorrow’s auction.

Poll: Will NamesCon Auction Set a Record?

I think the NamesCon domain auction being held on NameJet has the potential to be big. There are many awesome names up for sale and it seems like most of those already have bids. As of right now, there are several million in bids placed, although only one auction with a reserve price north of $10k has hit its reserve. There are several no reserve auctions above $10k though.

Monte Cahn, a co-founder of Right of the Dot, is one of the organizers of this year’s auction. In a tweet on Monday, he said that he believes the NamesCon auction is going to set a record for the largest domain name auction (beating the $12.3 million high water market set at TRAFFIC 2007).

I think there is a

Monte Cahn Predicts NamesCon Auction Will Be Largest

It looks like Monte Cahn believes the upcoming NamesCon domain name auction will be the largest domain auction of all time.

Earlier this morning, Colin Campbell, CEO and founder of the .Club Registry posted the tweet below asking if NamesCon will be the largest auction:

Monte Cahn responded to the question without hesitation and left no doubt about his expectations for the auction:

$1 Million+ Sale of JG.com Sets NameJet Record

JG.com sold at auction on NameJet yesterday for $1,035,000. The sale is the largest sale on record for the domain name auction platform. Once the sale is closed, it will rank as the second largest public domain name sale of 2015, just ahead of the PX.com sale and sale of 588.com.

There were  440 bids from 269 bidders. Interestingly, there were 5 bidders who placed bids at or above $800,000. Because of the late bidding, the auction extended more than two hours beyond the original ending time.

NameJet General Manager Jonathan Tenenbaum commented to me on the record setting sale:
