Bidding on Facebook Typo Seems Unwise

One of the top ten domain names listed under “The Drop” category on NameJet’s homepage today is Facebbok.com. With a little over two days to go until the expired domain name auction, there are ten bidders with a high bid of $166. This does not count any bids who placed backorders at SnapNames, DropCatch, Pheenix, or other drop catch auction platforms. Bidding on this domain name seems unwise to me.

Facebook has filed quite a few UDRPs for domain names the company believes is infringing on its mark. In fact, it looks like the company is undefeated in UDRP filings. Although I don’t recall reading about a cybersquatting lawsuit filed by the company, that doesn’t mean there have not been any filings, and it certainly doesn’t mean that there won’t be future litigation if the company feels it is necessary.

From my vantage point, this kind of domain name is all risk and hardly worth the risk. I understand that when there is money to be made, there will always be people willing to take the risk, but it is a bad look for the business of domain name investing.

PHHH.com Expires and Goes to Auction

When I read the DSAD daily auction list this morning, one name caught my attention: PHHH.com. The reason it caught my eye is because the PHH Corporation filed and won a UDRP complaint for the PHHH.com domain name  in mid-2015.

According to DomainTools Whois History Tool, the PHH Corporation was the registrant of PHHH.com in September of 2015, shortly after the UDRP decision:

PHHH.com UIDRP

At some point in 2016, the Whois information for this domain name was made private. It looks like the domain name expired in January of this year. There is a message at the top of the PHHH.com landing page that says,

10 Companies That Could Benefit from a NamesCon Auction Domain

I am sure that most people in the domain investment space read about the Sumo.com acquisition. Noah Kagan, the founder of the company, spoke about the importance of the Sumo.com domain name on Domain Sherpa and in an article he wrote on Entrepreneur.com.

I was looking through the NamesCon auction on NameJet, and I want to share my thoughts on 10 companies (or people) that could benefit from buying 10 domain names at auction, notwithstanding the reserve prices. Most of these domain names don’t match the brand name, but I either instantly thought of the company when seeing the domain name or I saw their major industry presence when Googling the keyword.

ImpeachTrump.com in Auction at GoDaddy

ImpeachTrump.com Domain Name

It seems that whenever there is a Presidential election in the US, there are people who call for the President’s impeachment. We are at a divisive time in US history, and despite the fact that President Donald Trump has been in office less than a month, there are people who would like to see the President impeached. For those who are on that side, the perfect domain name is in auction right now.

The ImpeachTrump.com domain name is currently in auction at GoDaddy Auctions. There have been two bids placed in the auction, and the current high bid is already at $1,524. The starting bid was $1,499. There is approximately one day remaining in the auction. There does not appear to be a reserve price that I can see, so it looks like the high bidder will win the auction.

This is not a typical expiring domain name auction at GoDaddy as ImpeachTrump.com

3 LLL.com Domain Names Lead GreatDomains Auction

The first GreatDomains auction of 2017 ended today, and a little more than $170,000 worth of domain names were sold via Sedo. The top three sales for the auction were three letter .com (LLL.com) domain names. A four number .com domain name had a strong showing as well. Five auctions hit five figures.

The top auction sale was LXW.com, which sold for $47,011. The second highest sale was TSD.com, which sold for $41,001. I would not be surprised if these domain names end up with Chinese registrants, but we will need to wait and see once the sales close.

As always, the GreatDomains auction ended this afternoon, so these sales have probably not closed yet. Sedo will report their closed sales to NameBio and DNJournal once the deals are concluded.

Here is the list of sales from this month’s auction:

BabyPhat.com Expires & Up for Auction

It looks like the BabyPhat.com domain name has expired and is currently up for auction at GoDaddy Auctions. The domain name had been associated with the once popular Baby Phat clothing and footwear brand.

If you visit BabyPhat.com right now, there’s a message on the domain name indicating that it is currently in auction after it expired and was not renewed in December:
