After 6 figure Domain Acquisition, Luxe Raises $50 Million

A little over a year ago, Aron Meystedt of Heritage Auctions sent me an email to announce a 6 figure post-auction sale. His company brokered Luxe.com for $172,500 after the company’s auction had concluded. Here’s what Aron told me in that March 2015 email:

www.Luxe.com is now an on demand parking and valet service… who received $20MM in funding recently.
They decided to shorten their domain from www.LuxeValet.com to just www.Luxe.com

We reached out to Luxe and described the benefits of moving forward on Luxe.com – and for them, it was a no brainer.
They bought it immediately. Following in the footsteps of Uber and others, customers can now intuitively find them at Luxe.com.

According to an article on TechCrunch, Luxe received a $50 million investment from Hertz.

The acquisition of the Luxe.com domain name seems

Google Domains Now Using Domains.Google

According to a tweet that was published this afternoon, Google Domains is now using a .Google domain name for its website. Previously, the company was using Domains.Google.com for its website, but it recently changed its url to Domains.Google:

I would imagine that many people in the new gTLD space will applaud Google’s move to a .Google domain name. It makes sense that the company would begin using its branded domain name for this particular business unit.

The one thing that seems a bit strange to me is that the registrar is

Will a New gTLD Domain Be Used in a Super Bowl Ad?

We know that Super Bowl television advertisements are usually funny and edgy. One way to be humorous and edgy, in my opinion, is to use a new gTLD domain name for a Super Bowl advertising website. If a humorous domain name were to be used, it could help create a buzz and also be used to better track traffic following the Super Bowl.

I have no idea if any companies are planning to use a new domain name in their Super Bowl advertising campaigns, but I would not be shocked to see one. I would imagine someone in the domain space  might have noticed that a large company purchased a new domain name but I haven’t seen anything reported yet. Of course, a company could have easily registered something under Whois privacy and it hasn’t been revealed yet.

I am curious if you think a new gTLD domain name extension is going to be used by a brand during  tomorrow’s Super Bowl. It would almost certainly create as much buzz as Google’s decision to use a .XYZ domain name for its new parent company, Alphabet.

Vote in the poll today and watch the big game tomorrow to see.

I would guess that quite a few  people know Sol Orwell (formerly Ahmed Farooq) from his time in the domain investment space. Sol is the founder of Examine.com, a very successful website that was launched in 2011. Sol paid $41k for Examine.com, and he has received much acclaim as a result of the success and popularity of the business.

I want to direct you to a fantastic email marketing case study that Sol shared on his personal website, SJO.com. Sol detailed how he and his company “segmented our email list at  Examine.com to 6500 emails and used it to generate over $100,000 for a sale.” There is quite a bit of detail about the tactics the company used as well as the payoff.

ABC Announces Freeform; Acquires Freeform.com

In an article published on October 6, ABC announced a name change for ABC Family. According to the article, “ABC Family changes its name to Freeform in January 2016! The network’s new name reflects our ongoing priority to super-serve Becomers, fans on that epic adventure of becoming an adult—from first kiss to first kid!

When I read about the rebranding, I visited Freeform.com to see if ABC was using the exact match .com domain name. Yes, Freeform.com currently forwards to ABCFamily.Go.com, the ABC Family website. A current Whois lookup confirms that Freeform.com is registered to ABC, Inc.

Interestingly, ABC.com Inc. was not listed as the
