Can gTLD / nTLD Pre Registration Lists Help You Find Good Domain Names?

With the new TLDs coming soon(ish), domain registrars like 101 Domain, 1&1, Name.com, and others have been taking pre-reservations. While these are non-binding, it gives the registrars and TLD applicants some decent data about what the demand will be like when these TLDs come on the market. I wonder if this data would be helpful to domain investors today who want to find domain names that will be in demand in the future.

Rick Schwartz posted an article today that got me thinking about something related to these pre-registrations. He mentioned that he was surprised that .Online appears to be popular because of the little traffic his various -Online.com domain names receive. I am sure that will change once .Online domain names are available and used.

That said, I wonder if there’s an opportunity today for

Uniregistry Video: Frank Schilling Discusses the Future of the Internet

I want to share this video uploaded to YouTube by Uniregistry, the company founded by Frank Schilling that is applying for hundreds of new gTLD strings. In the video, you can get an idea of Frank’s vision for the Internet once new gTLD domain names become available and used.

There is considerable uncertainty right now, but one thing is certain for me. It’s been very cool to watch the Internet change right before my eyes.  There will be winners and there will be losers. Fortunes will be made and lost. It’s been exciting to see all of this unfold in front of us.

The Internet as we know it is changing, and it’s going to cause great change in our businesses.

Top 5 nTLD Pre Reservations at 1&1

Domain registrar 1&1 has been advertising the new gTLD domain names somewhat extensively in the US during NFL games. The company may be advertising at other times as well, but I have primarily seen these commercials while watching football.

I find these commercials most interesting because 1 & 1 is advertising a product that is not yet available and the company doesn’t know exactly when the new gTLDs will become available. They are also advertising pre-reservations, which are non-binding.

That said, the company is reporting the number of pre reservations it has received, and that number has eclipsed 1.6 million. The top 5 pre reserved gTLDs are:

1&1 Runs New gTLD Commercial

If you’re watching the NFL today, you may have seen one of (if not the) first new gTLD television commercials. Domain registrar 1&1 ran the commercial I embedded above. It’s all about notifying the general public about the new gTLDs that are coming, and it implores people to pre-reserve a new domain name now.

It’s interesting that the company has

New gTLDs Will…

New gTLD domain names are a source of discussion and debate throughout the domain investment space. Off the top of my head, I can’t really think of a more polarizing topic related to domain names.

Last week, I reached out to a random group of colleagues to get their feedback on the new gTLD domain names that will be rolling out soon. I asked them to complete the following sentence using 5 of their own words or less: “gTLDs will…” As you can see below, the responses run the gamut.

Within the next few months, new gTLDs will become available for the public to register, purchase, reserve, and use, and I think it’s going to be fun to watch what happens. I invite you to complete the “gTLDs will…” sentence in your own 5 words in the comment section.

Thanks to those who participated and to those who participate with a comment!

Go Daddy .LA Auction Results

Go Daddy Aftermarket Director Paul Nicks provided the results of the .LA auction held by Go Daddy that finished earlier today. In total, the auction generated a little over $25,000 in sales, with 112 of the 273 domain names selling (minimum opening bid was $100 for each).

It would be great to know how many new .LA domain names were registered while the auction was being promoted, but I doubt that information will be shared.

Listed below are the domain names that sold along with their prices. Payment has not been posted for any of the domain names, so they are all technically “pending sale” until the deals close.
