My Experience With Soothe

Soothe is an on-demand, in-home massage service that was founded by Merlin Kauffman  in 2013. The company has raised nearly $50 million in funding, and massage therapists are available in some of the largest cities in the US, including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco, and now Boston.

I was happy to learn that Soothe is available in Boston, and my wife and I decided to give it a try last night. I logged into Soothe, and I booked an hour-long appointment with a Soothe massage therapist. It was easy to book, and I received a confirmation text. Alexis came over to our home (a suburb of Boston) after the kids went to bed. She  arrived a few minutes early and sent me a text to ask if it was okay for her to come early (it was).

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed the massage. We don't regularly go out for a massage, so I don't have much to compare it to, but it felt great and relaxing. It was super convenient to have Alexis come right to our house, especially at night after the kids went to sleep. She brought the table, → Read More

Merlin’s Soothe Raises $35m in Funding

Yesterday afternoon, I shared an interview Merlin Kauffman had with a local Fox television affiliate to promote his popular and growing in-home massage startup, Soothe. It looks like there is more news from the company today - and it is pretty significant.

According to a VentureBeat article published this afternoon, Soothe just raised $35 million in funding. The article stated that Soothe has now raised a total of $47.7 million in funding. The article did not mention a valuation for Soothe at this level of funding.

Merlin Kauffman Talks About Soothe on Fox 59

Merlin Kauffman was interviewed on Fox 59 this morning, and I embedded the interview below. Fox 59 is the Fox television station affiliate in Indiana, and Merlin is originally from Indianapolis. The topic of the interview is Merlin's at-home massage service called Soothe, which just launched in the Indianapolis market.

I am sure it was an honor for Merlin to be interviewed on his local television station. Hopefully Soothe will launch in the greater Boston market in the near future!

Merlin Kauffman Making Bitcoin News

Many people in the domain space know of or personally know Merlin Kauffman. My opinion is that Merlin is one of the shrewdest domain investors, and he has done very well with his domain investments. In September, I covered his launch of Soothe, which is sort of like Uber for massage therapy. This week, Merlin has made news for a bitcoin related matter.

According to CoinDesk, an online publication that covers bitcoin and other digital currencies, Merlin Kauffman's "Las Vegas-based bitcoin investment fund CoinSeed announced a substantial (more…) → Read More

Merlin Kauffman Launches Soothe

SootheIt's great seeing some of the entrepreneurial people in the domain space starting new ventures. I want to share news about a new venture that was recently started by Merlin Kauffman. Soothe is "an online and mobile app that connects people who want to book same-day in-home massages with the best hand-picked massage therapists." Wisely, Soothe can be found at

Merlin privately  acquired  the domain name in May of this year, and the business was launched soon thereafter. The purchase price for the domain name was not released, but I am sure it was expensive.

According to its website, "Soothe is now the largest massage provider in Los Angeles, and has plans to be in every major city in the USA within 24 months." That is some incredible growth to go from a startup without revenue to its current positioning. In addition to its massage service offerings, the company also has a line of massage products under the Soothe brand. One of the nice things about the Soothe name is that it is a meaningful descriptive → Read More

Yahoo Sells,, and to True Magic

Yahoo! In a $250,000 deal that took place on Sedo last week, Yahoo sold the domain name to Merlin Kauffman's True Magic, LLC. According to some analytics that I have seen, gets considerable traffic - nearly 1,000 unique visitors a day according to Compete, despite the fact that it hasn't been promoted in quite some time. In the week since acquiring the domain name, Kauffman's company already completed another deal and re-sold it.

True Magic also recently bought from Yahoo for $17,500 and for $13,500. His company plans to develop into a resource for reverse phone lookups, people lookups, background checks, etc. This is the perfect domain for these plans. According to Kauffman, his company is "always on the lookout for opportunities to buy and broker premium domain names."

From what I have heard through the grapevine, Yahoo is looking to sell other domain names as well. It's a bit surprising that the publicly traded company (YHOO on Nasdaq) is selling great domain → Read More
