Donuts Announces 6 Figure .News Deal

9

In a press release published this morning, Donuts announced a six figure sale involving a package of .News domain names. The health and environmental domain names were acquired in late 2017 by a company called WebSeed, Inc., which launched websites on them earlier this year. The domain names that were sold in this package deal are:

  • Science.News

  • Food.News

  • Health.News

  • Medicine.News

  • Pollution.News

  • Cancer.News

  • Climate.News

Donuts did not share the individual sale prices for these domain names, nor did they comment on the price of the package beyond saying it was "a six-figure price."

I think deals like this benefit the registry for two reasons. Not only does Donuts get revenue from the sale, but perhaps more importantly, it controls who is buying the domain names. This allows the company to understand how the domain names will be used, and the usage could provide benefits to the extension once they gain awareness. The registry can choose who gets to buy its "Platinum" (registry-reserved) domain names, which → Read More

Compound (.Finance) Raises $8.2 Million

10

A startup using a .Finance domain name has raised an $8.2 million round of funding from some of the leading venture capital firms, according to TechCrunch. Compound Labs, which can be found by visiting Compound.Finance, was founded in 2017. The VC firms that reportedly invested in Compound include Coinbase's venture fund, Andreessen Horowitz, Polychain Capital, and Bain Capital Ventures. .Finance is a new gTLD domain name extension operated by Donuts.

I think this news is notable for two reasons.

The lack of a .com domain name did not stop the company from getting this large funding round. It would seem that owning the matching Compound.com domain name was not deemed critical to its launch. Assuming a deal to acquire the domain name has not been reached, it would seem that the startup is cool with proceeding sans the matching .com domain name. Having a major funding round publicly announced can make the matching .com domain name more expensive. For what its worth, DomainIQ values it at $156,000.

Buyer of Vacation.Rentals Does AMA

19

Donuts reported that it sold the Vacation.Rentals domain name for $500,300 in an all-cash deal. This sale was reportedly the largest new gTLD domain name sale to date. It was the second reported $500,000+ sale of a new gTLD domain name reported by Donuts this year.

Earlier today, I was alerted via Twitter and email that the buyer of Vacation.Rentals, Mike Kugler, did an AMA (Ask Me Anything) on the AMAFeed.com platform. In the AMA, there were quite a few questions posed about the domain name and the acquisition of the domain name.

Here are some of the more relevant domain name related questions that were posed: (more…) → Read More

Donuts is 2017 Technology Fast 500 Winner

1

In the 2017 edition of Deloitte's Technology Fast 500 awards, Donuts was the top ranking company in North America. The Technology Fast 500 awards recognizes "the fastest growing public and private technology companies in North America." The award has existed for more than 20 years. Last year's winner was Loot Crate.

According to a press release distributed by Deloitte this morning, "Donuts Inc. claimed the top spot with a growth rate of 59,093 percent from 2013 to 2016." The actual revenue number was not shared, so that remains unknown. Deloitte looks at % of fiscal revenue growth from 2013-2016 to determine the winner. I am not sure if there is a minimum revenue figure in order to be considered for the list. The four other top finishers for 2017 were Classpass, Toast, Aratana Therapeutics, Inc., and Theravance Biopharma US, Inc.

I took a quick look at the top 500 companies (more…) → Read More

GoDaddy Acquires Name.com Domain Portfolio + Expiry Stream

10

I detected a domain portfolio acquisition by GoDaddy's NameFind, and the news was confirmed to me by the company yesterday afternoon. GoDaddy acquired an unknown number of domain names from the Name.com / Rightside domain name portfolio, which I believe was sold by Donuts. Up until earlier this year, Name.com was owned by Rightside, a company that was recently acquired by Donuts. GoDaddy also informed me that the Name.com expiry stream will now go to auction via GoDaddy Auctions.

Nick Fuller, who is Director of Public Relations at GoDaddy, sent me the following statement from VP and GM of the Aftermarket at GoDaddy, Paul Nicks:

“We can confirm that GoDaddy has acquired domain names from Name.com. These names will help anyone looking to make a statement online. The domain names are a mixture of .com domain names as well as new tlds and will be added to the NameFind portfolio. We have also worked out an agreement with Name.com to add their domain names to our expiry auctions.”

The company did not (more…) → Read More

Andee Hill Hired by ICANN

10

Over the weekend, I saw that Andee Hill announced that she has left Donuts. Andee worked there for two years as Director of Business Development at Donuts. Prior to Donuts, Andee founded (and sold) an escrow service and got her start in the domain business at Escrow.com.

Of her time at Donuts, Andee said she is "Honored to have worked at a smart company and with smart people.” Her last day at the company was July 31.

After reading the news about her departure from Donuts, I reached out to Andee to see if she is staying in the domain name industry and ask what her plans are. Andee told me she has accepted an offer from ICANN to become its Registrar Services & Engagement Programs Director.

"I'm very excited to start the position and feel very lucky to have had the opportunity to (more…) → Read More
